Sky Valley festival includes visual, performing arts

The Sky Valley Artists’ Guild celebrates the arts – both visual and performing – at the 16th annual Art in the Park outdoor arts festival Saturday and Sunday in Monroe.

Travelers Park (look for the landmark old smokestack) is the setting for a show and sale of regional arts and crafts plus a full entertainment lineup beginning at 11 a.m. both days.

There will be garden art, jewelry, bead work and wearable art, plus two-dimensional work in watercolor, oil, acrylic and pen and ink.

Children can try their hand at making art, and the Sky Valley Artists’ Guild is sponsoring silent auctions both days.

Saturday’s entertainment lineup includes:

Singer-guitarist Terry Carlson at 11 a.m.; the Christian music group Quill at 12:30 p.m.; Monroe singer-songwriter Peter Blake and Snohomish fiddler Kris Forster at 2 p.m. Cajun, Creole and zydeco music by Jamais Trop Tard at 3:30 p.m.; and F Street Project playing R&B, blues and classic rock at 5 p.m.

Sunday brings Smoke Creek playing original songs, ballads, country-western songs and old-time instrumentals at noon; singer-songwriter Reggie Miles playing rural Delta blues at 1:15 p.m.; the Evergreen Community Choir at 2:30 p.m.; Boys On The Side, a barbershop quartet, at 3:15 p.m.; and F Street Project at 4:15 p.m.

Arlington Art Fair: Arlington celebrates the arts at the Arlington Art Fair-Avenue of Quilts today and Saturday at Legion Park.

A highlight of the two-day festival is the “Mural in Two Days” project in which muralist Harry Engstrom is inviting the public to help him create a 16-foot by 16-foot mural to be mounted in the downtown area. Engstrom has completed two murals in Arlington.

The festival includes demonstrations and hands-on projects by Arlington-area artists, including pottery demonstration by Persis Gayle; paper making with Cecelia Patterson; pastels with Carey Waterworth; oil paintings by Pat DeAscentis and Shirley Fulfs; woodcarving with Monica Yantis; fused glass and beading with Sara Klise; wool spinning by Karen Keith.

Also, silver metal and clay jewelry with Pam Summers; collage with Arlene Swartz; and quilting with Eva Hagen, whose quilts will be on display in the park.

Music will be provided by the Old Time Fiddlers and other groups.

The festival is a project of the newly formed Arlington Arts Council, which aims to bring art to the people of Arlington and provide venues to showcase the work of Arlington-area artists.

The Arlington Art Fair coincides with the annual Avenue of Quilts exhibit, seen throughout downtown today and Saturday.

The Avenue of Quilts is a display of quilts made by various quilting groups. Look for quilts by the Jim Creek Quilters at Arlington Hardware; the Monday Morning Quilters at the VFW Hall; the Loose Threads at Evonne’s; the United Church Quilters at the Arlington United Church; and the Wrap Them in Love quilts from Arlington Fabric.
