New principal at Everett school

Donna Ramos is the new principal of Immaculate Conception/Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Everett. She was the assistant principal of St. Joseph School in Seattle and has spent a decade working in Catholic schools.

She plans to strengthen the elementary school’s Catholic identity and lead it in growth, including focusing on making the school more financially accessible to the Hispanic community.

Law school grad from Mariner

Dan Barkley, who graduated from Mariner High School in 1987, was selected by his classmates to be the student speaker at the 2009 Seattle University School of Law commencement on May 16.

During law school, he was elected a student faculty standards representative, worked on the Seattle Journal for Social Justice and was a regional finalist in the American Trial Lawyers Association mock trial competition.

10 earn certificates at EvCC fire academy

Ten students in the Everett Community College Fire Academy earned certificates in June after completing 15 weeks of training.

They received certificates for firefighter 1 and hazardous materials operations.

The Graduates are Tyler Ackley, Bryan Clemens, Andrew Dennis, Jenna Gracey, Sean McDonald, Brian Merkley, Nicholas Perez, Anthony Roepke, Matt Rommel and Michael Schroeder.

The drillmaster for the group was Dave Neyens, a retired battalion chief with the Everett Fire Department.

Everett Community College’s fire science degree program runs two Firefighter 1 academies each year in the fall and spring. Classes for both academies next year are scheduled to meet at night.

The next academy begins August 31. Students can earn an associate’s degree in technical arts in fire science.

Students must be at least 18, have a high school diploma or GED and a valid photo ID to apply.

Monroe resident earns degree

Ian Colin Barnes of Monroe earned a bachelor of arts degree from Connecticut College in New London, Conn. on May 17.

Local students get degree from Excelsior

Four students from Snohomish and Island counties recently graduated from Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y.

They are:

Lake Stevens resident Tanya Huneycutt, who earned a bachelor of science degree.

Freeland resident Jeremy Wandrei, who earned an associate in applied science degree in technical studies.

Marysville resident Todd Edwin Kowalczyk, who earned a bachelor of science degree in technology.

Snohomish resident Raymond Williams, who earned a bachelor of science degree in technology.

Snohomish woman makes dean’s list

Ashley Julian of Snohomish earned a spot on the spring semester dean’s list at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Ore.

More than 450 students were named to the list. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, while completing a minimum of 12 hours of graded coursework for the duration of the term.
