Snohomish festival will host chili, BBQ contests

Does your chili put hair on your chest and make your nostrils flare?

Do you grill the kind of barbecue meat that can be cut with a fork?

Well, it’s time to put your meat where your mouth is (or your skills and your spatula to the test.)

Kla Ha La Days in Snohomish, an annual summertime event, will kick off its 100th-year celebration with a Spring Carnival and couple of cook-offs.

The Spring Carnival will host a Chili Appreciation Society International qualifying cook-off and a Pacific Northwest Barbecue Association qualifying cook-off.

The chili cook-off starts 8 a.m. Saturday. This cook off has a Home Style category where anything goes.

First prize is $100.

For more information, contact event promoter Ken Peach at 253-53-4591 or kkmpeach@aol.com.

The barbecue cook-off starts 8 a.m. Sunday. There will be new teams along with top barbecuing teams competing in this qualifier. Three main competition categories are tri-tip, chicken and pork, and there’s a sausage option.

Total prize and award pool is valued at $2,500.

All chili and barbecue events will be held at Le Gourmet Depot, 110 Cedar Ave., Snohomish.

Le Gourmet Depot will offer samples at both cook-offs for a $5 entry fee.

Registration for the chili cook off or the Home Style cook off is $10, or $15 for both. To register and for more competition details such as turn-in times, go to www.klahayadays.com/events/event/kla-ha-ya-spring-festival-chili-cook-off.

For the barbecue cook off, the entry fee is $75 for a 20-by-20-foot space and $150 for a 40-by-40-foot space. To register and pay online, go to www.klahayadays.com/events/event/kla-ha-ya-spring-carnival-lite-bbq-cook-off.
