Snohomish Theater Project’s ‘Gilligan’s Island’ goes over the top on purpose

The classic television sitcom, “Gilligan’s Island,” lands its castaways in a parody in Snohomish.

Still, the show will take place outside and on a tropical island.

“Gilligan’s Island, a Parody” has been described as a caviar comedy on a soup-kitchen budget.

The comedy is based o

n a plot in which the castaways on a desert island wonder if the treasure Gilligan has found really is cursed by a witch doctor, while they also ponder whether they will be rescued.

And if you are at all familiar with the local acting scene, this parody has several favorites in the cast, including Asa Sholdez, Mike McFadden, Melanie Calderwood, Terry Simon, Rick Wright, Kimberly Riley and Liz Adkisson, plus new faces Chad Oswald, Janice Fix and Adam Fisher.

The show, brought to you by Snohomish Theater Project, will be performed outside in the Carnegie Library parking lot.

This is a new venue for Snohomish Theater Project, said director Eric Lewis.

“We loved the idea of being outside,” Lewis said.

Lewis said as part of the whole spirit of the parody, this production was being called “an epic parody” where the title comes from Snohomish Theater Project’s tradition of “creating original works that are ‘epic,’ which is another way of saying ‘cheap,'” Lewis said.

“It is a poke at overblown, overproduced theater,” Lewis said.

There have been some challenges, such as trying to create an entire island that can be set up in less than an hour, Lewis said, but the cast and crew “have been absolutely wonderful about getting in the spirit of Gilligan.”

“Gilligan’s Island, a Parody” is at 7 p.m. today and Saturday and Aug. 26 and 2 p.m. Sunday and 2 and 7 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Carnegie Library parking lot, 105 Cedar St., Snohomish. Bring your own chairs or blankets. Free.
