In brief

Garden workshops: The Arlington Garden Club sponsors a series of workshops for the public.

“How to turn your thumb green” series teaches fall and winter gardening tips, tricks and fundamentals. The three-part series includes a class about vegetable gardening, container gardening and winterizing. Each class is taught by a Snohomish County master gardener.

Workshops are held 10 to 11:30 a.m. the second Saturday of the month in the community room of the Boys and Girls Club, 18513 59th Ave. NE, Arlington. On Saturday, the final class in the series is “Winterizing Your Garden” with Wink Cushman. Learn how to put gardens to bed for the winter and find out what to do now to save time in the spring.

Registration recommended. Call Linda at 360-403-7769.

Holiday homes: Designers Bob Pranga and Debi Staron, known for designing holiday settings for celebrities such as Whoopi Goldberg, Shaquille O’Neal and Leeza Gibbons, will be promoting their new book, “Christmas Style,” in Everett Sunday.

Pranga and Staron will sign the book, answer questions, demonstrate tree trimming and answer questions at Display &Costume, 5209 Evergreen Way. Call 425-353-3364.

They will also make a presentation Saturday, at Swanson’s Nursery in Seattle, 9701 15th Ave. NW. Call 206-782-2543.

“Christmas Style” ($29.95) is filled with photographs of holiday theme settings – from traditional to contemporary – and instructions on how to re-create each look.

Forcing time: Start amaryllis and paperwhite narcissus bulbs over the next two weeks for blooms during the holidays. Water sparingly until shoots emerge. The stems will need staking with canes or other props to avoid flopping.

Restoration grants: The National Trust for Historic Preservation and Home &Garden Television announce that applications for HGTV’s “Restore America: A Salute to Preservation” grants of up to $100,000 each are now available.

Six to 12 grants will be awarded for projects that include rehabilitation of single family residences, adaptive use of historic buildings for housing, creation of upper-floor apartments in Main Street communities, or restoration of Save America’s Treasures sites that continue to have residential use.

Nonprofit organizations and public agencies are invited to apply for an HGTV “Restore America” grant. Grant applications must be postmarked by Nov. 30.

For information, grant guideline and applications, visit www.nationaltrust.org/ restore_america/ra_grants.html.

Poinsettia festival: Molbak’s hosts its annual Festival of Poinsettias featuring 13 new varieties of poinsettias.

The annual festival begins Saturday and continues through Dec. 12. The free festival features 46 varieties of the winter plant. Participants can listen to festival holiday music, sample Danish pastry with coffee and have photos taken beside a 10-foot “poinsettia tree.”

Hours of the festival at 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. Molbak’s will be closed on Thanksgiving.

Molbak’s is at 13625 NE 175th St., Woodinville. For information, call 425-483-5000.
