Beautify the waterfront: You could plan to celebrate the first official weekend of summer by relaxing in the sun — but really, what are the odds of catching any rays?
Instead, you could go to the Beach Expo at Picnic Point County Park to lend a hand with beach clean-ups, habitat restoration and invasive species removal. If the weather is nice, you can always break away to explore the low-tide area, potentially seeing some sea life.
On June 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., volunteers can gather to tackle the chores at Picnic Point Park, 12001 Picnic Point Road, Edmonds.
The public park is one of the few in Snohomish County providing beach access west of the railroad line. Its approximate 1,200 feet of beachfront attracts picnickers and beachcombers, boat launches and crabbing trips.
The park has a stream with a large eel grass bed. As the stream drains into Puget Sound, the eel grass provides harbor for forage fish, young salmon and young crab.
To volunteer for the event, contact in advance Amy Johnson with Snohomish County Surface Water Management at 425-388-3464, ext. 4573, or e-mail amy.johnson@snoco.org. Direct general questions to Chrys Bertolotto with Washington State University Beach Watchers at 425-357-6020 or chrys@wsu.edu.
