Student nominated for media conference

Emily Perkins of Clinton, a senior at South Whidbey High School, has been nominated to represent Washington as a national youth correspondent to the 2011 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University in Washington, D.C.

Perkins will join a select group of students from all over the country for an intensive study of journalism and media. She was chosen based on academic accomplishments, and a demonstrated interest and excellence in journalism and media studies.

Jackson High senior in national jazz band

Walter Cano, a senior from Henry M. Jackson High School, has been selected by Music for All to perform in one of the nation’s ensembles, the 2011 Jazz Band of America.

Cano is the son of Laura Lovera and Walter Cano. He is a member of the Jackson High School jazz band and band ensembles under the direction of Lesley Moffat.

Rotary names students of month

The Rotary Club of Everett honored high school seniors Victoria Moran, Tuan Nguyen, Keito Omokawa and Allison Weir as Rotary Students of the Month for March.

Moran is senior at Archbishop Murphy High School who plans to go to the University of Washington.

Nguyen is a senior at Archbishop Murphy who volunteered 124 hours with disabled children last summer.

Omokawa is a senior at Everett High School who was born in Tokyo and moved to Hawaii at age 3.

Weir is a senior at Cascade High School who plans to attend art school and open her own graphic design business.

Edmonds man a Whitworth grad

Andrew Eller of Edmonds received a bachelor’s degree in international studies and Spanish from Whitworth University. He graduated summa cum laude.

Local students Excelsior grads

Roy Vasquez and Richard Ruiz Sanchez have earned degrees from Excelsior College.

Vasquez of Lake Stevens earned an associate degree. Sanchez of Oak Harbor Sanchez graduated with a bachelor’s degree.

Lake Stevens gives Apple Awards

The Lake Stevens School District honored four employees with the March 2011 Apple Award.

Recipients are Kit Shanholtzer, technology teacher at Lake Stevens High School; Tom Scranton, special education teacher at Lake Stevens High School; Carole Zachman, third-grade teacher at Mount Pilchuck Elementary; and Sue Albin, head custodian at Mount Pilchuck Elementary.
