Arlington students win Elks awards
Two Arlington High School students from the class of 2011 have won the Elks Most Valuable Student contest.
Caroline Rensel was awarded first place in the girls division. Corinne McClure was awarded third place.
The Elks National Foundation provides more than $3.64 million in college scholarships each year through its three scholarship programs. The Everett Elks Lodge facilitates the scholarship program for Snohomish County schools.
Students are critiqued in areas of citizenship, personality, leadership, perseverance, resourcefulness, patriotism, community involvement and academic strength.
The Elks received more than 50 applications and awarded 10 scholarships this year.
An awards ceremony is planned at the Elks Lodge in May.
Rotary honors students of month
The Rotary Club of Everett last week honored two high school students as the club’s students of the month.
Cascade High School senior Samantha Ormrod and Everett High School senior Berit Reisenauer were recognized for their accomplishments.
Samantha sings in three different choirs at Cascade and was selected for the Washington All-State Choir. She has volunteered for the Notables food drive and works with the elderly at a Mill Creek residential facility.
The National Honor Society and leadership class member plans to study music in college and build a career as a music educator or performer.
Berit is taking five advanced placement courses at Everett High. She is an accomplished musician who plays flute in the high school jazz band. She has invested 1,000 hours as a volunteer for Young Life and lettered three years in cross-country, track and band.
She hopes to attend Dartmouth College after graduation, spend time in Peace Corps and go to graduate school.
Student makes Seattle U dean’s list
Nick Oen, has been named to the dean’s list of the College of Science and Engineering at Seattle University.
He is the son of Ken and Dee Oen of Mukilteo.
Arlington bands hold annual Jazz Nite
Arlington High School, Haller Middle School and Post Middle School put on quite a show earlier this month with their annual Jazz Nite concert at the Byrnes Performing Arts Center.
This was the final Jazz Nite for the following seniors: Bradley Boatman, baritone sax; James Clark, alto sax; Ben Huge, trumpet; Hayden Love, drums; Marissa Meyrick, trumpet; David Murray, bass; Nathaniel Ries, tenor sax; Tylar Sallee, drums; Joshua Vaughan, trombone; and Tyler Gitchel, baritone sax.
