Super Kid: Animal lover Maggie Schroeder

Lifelong goal Maggie decided she wanted to be a veterinarian when she was 3, after she fell in love with her first cat, Winkles. That childhood ambition pushed her to earn high grades — she has a 3.98 grade point average — and join several clubs, including the Twitch ‘N’ Time Rabbit 4-H Club.

Driving force “I was born less than a year after my brother died, and then after that, I grew up with a half-brother who was handicapped. So that’s probably one of the most significant things for why I am who I am. Just knowing that if you are healthy and have all these opportunities from the get-go, you should never take that for granted.”

College courses Maggie, a senior, will major in animal science at Washington State University. She wants to be accepted into the college’s veterinary school — one of the nation’s top programs in that field — after earning her bachelor’s degree. “I visualize myself working with small animals,” she said.

Graduation day “I’m so excited for college. High school’s nice and all, but I really feel ready for more stimulation and a different, more mature environment. I’m excited to learn about things that I’m actually really interested in.”

Favorite animal Maggie loves her many pet rabbits but still has a special place in her heart for cats. “Right now I’m volunteering at Everett Animal Shelter, and I’m working with their cats, and taking care of them, and socializing them,” she said. “I do that two hours every week.”

Favorite movie “ ‘The Lion King.’ It makes me cry and makes me really happy, too. I like random movie soundtracks like that. It has a really good one. I’ll be walking down the hallway, and people will be thinking I’m listening to something cool, but I’m probably just listening to ‘The Lion King’ soundtrack.”

Hey, Bulldog Maggie also listens to The Beatles a lot. Her favorite concert was a show by a Fab Four cover band, Rain. She said John Lennon’s her favorite, with Paul McCartney taking second. “I’ve been listening to them since I was little,” she said. “I love them. I love John.”

Alone time “I’m more of an independent person. I do like to hang out with my friends a lot — I have best friends — but I’m content being by myself, too. I need my alone time. I’m kind of like a cat that way.”
