Taking the lead: Daniel finds it ironic that he is the school’s ASB activities manager and part of a leadership class organizing student events, including “Challenge Day” that’s aimed at helping students feel more a part of their school. “I know my freshman year I was one of those freshmen way on top of the bleachers who didn’t like pep assemblies. This last one I was an emcee for the pep assembly.”
Why the change? A fellow guitar-player who was a student government leader last year told him he should get involved. “I just thought he was crazy.”
Adding breadth: He hopes to get more students who might be reluctant to get involved to feel invested in their school. “I’m getting to know a lot of people I wouldn’t have known otherwise.”
Full schedule: Daniel has seven classes, one more than a regular class load. His courses include jazz band, the jazz choir Jazzmine, leadership, calculus, physics, psychology and college writing.
On the run: He participates in cross-country and track and ran the Seattle half-marathon with his dad.
Home grown: Daniel moved to Arlington before he started elementary school. He’s attended Kent Prairie Elementary, Post Middle School and Arlington High School.
Into music He plays guitar for two school musical groups: Jazzmine and On Hold, an instrumental jazz band. He plays electric and acoustic guitar and is thinking about studying music at the University of Washington. Daniel prefers acoustic if he is playing for his own enjoyment.
Influences: He likes listening to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan but lately has been enjoying Dave Matthews Band and Eddie Vedder’s “Into The Wild” movie soundtrack. “I’m way into Dave Matthews right now. That whole band is so good.”
Summer reading: Daniel enjoyed “Into The Wild” by Jon Krakauer and “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger.
Savoring his ZZZs: A busy schedule with music, sports, classes and leadership doesn’t stop him from trying to get enough sleep. “I get about eight hours. I really need my sleep. I’m dying without it.”
