History buff: Damon likes learning about history and particularly has enjoyed courses in European and art history.
More than needed: For the second straight year, his schedule includes an extra independent study class, this time a college-level Advanced Placement American Government class. His schedule includes four college-level courses.
Next year: Damon plans to apply to the University of Washington. He is taking classes in Spanish and English for UW credit this year. He’s undecided on a major but is considering a pre-law track.
Taking a lead: As a student body senator the past two years, Damon has had a hand in student government. He also takes a leadership class and said helping plan a schoolwide assembly that turns out well is a highlight of high school. “If you are going to spend your time on something, you might as well spend it on something worthwhile.”
Swim teacher: Damon works at the high school swimming pool five days a week. He has been a lifeguard and a swim instructor. “There are people who taught me how to swim who are now my co-workers.”
Making music He’s been a member of a band at his church and has played piano, guitar and the djembe. The djembe? It’s an African drum he learned to play on a mission trip to Mexico. “I love it. Oh, yeah, the djembe, I go crazy on that.”
Likes Luke: Damon confesses to being a “Star Wars” nerd. “My cousin got me into it when I was about 7 and I’ve been into it ever since. Everyone can pull something out of those movies. It’s just a lot of fun.”
Good home town: Lake Stevens has been a good place to grow up. Damon’s mom teaches kindergarten at Highland Elementary School in town and his dad commutes to King County. He has two younger brothers. “Mom and Dad came here because they knew it would be a good place to grow up. Dad works in Seattle. I think they definitely had their kids in mind, which is something you can appreciate.”
Helping out: Last year, he was part of an effort at his school to raise money to help protect boys in Uganda from being taken from their homes and forced to fight for a rebel leader.
