World traveler: Jennifer Mack was raised in Lakewood, but she has spent much of her childhood seeing the world. Her dad was director of an international school in Latvia in Eastern Europe during her seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade years of school. She has been to more than 30 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Favorite destination: France. It gave her a chance to practice the French she was learning in school.

College plans: Whitman College in Walla Walla. She’s considering a major that would encompass biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology.

Favorite subjects: Math and science. “Math is like a puzzle you get to figure out. That really interests me.”

Home sweet home: Jennifer discovered that she likes the rain of the Pacific Northwest compared with the climate in Latvia, which includes freezing cold winters and hot, humid summers.

Long-term goal: A career in medicine. She doesn’t know exactly what discipline, but becoming a surgeon is a possibility.

Busy schedule: Her class load includes third-year Spanish, calculus, chemistry, college English, college-level advanced placement government and leadership.

Learning to lead: Jennifer is Lakewood High School’s student body president. It has been a good lesson in delegating. “It was a lot of learning, but it was well worth it,” she said. “I’m a perfectionist, but I learned to try not to do everything myself.”

Strong showing: Her scores as a junior on the PSAT earned her the designation of commended scholar in the annual National Merit Scholarship competition.

Nice spot: Her family lives along Lake Shoecraft in north Snohomish County.

Smart crowd: Jennifer was a member of the school’s Hi-Q academic team.

On the run: She was voted captain of the school’s cross-country team.

Student voice: For two years, Jennifer offered another perspective to the Lakewood School Board as its student representative.

Reluctant speaker: Although Jennifer has taken on leadership positions at her school, she said people might be surprised to learn she doesn’t like public speaking. “It’s not my favorite, but I’m getting better at it. I still get nervous.”
