Superkid: Jon Fenstermaker, 17, Darrington High School senior

Always room for pie: How many slices in a homemade pie? Jon Fenstermaker says it’s eight, the same number as his group of close friends, whom he calls “Home Pie.” Those friends — Adam Carter, Dylan Landry, John Smith, Chuckie Neidigh, Moe Hyde, Caleb Wiegand and Kolton Palmer — are part of the reason Darrington is a great school, Jon said. “In a small school, everyone is friends with everybody. At a big school, you might run into new people every day.” And what kind of pie is his Home Pie? “Oh, we’re a chocolate pudding pie.”

Football and wrestling: Jon played football and wrestled during high school. In February, he took third place in the 135-pound weight category at the state Class 2B wrestling championships in Tacoma. He also wrestles with a freestyle club, helps coach younger wrestlers and earned the Blood-and-Guts award at school this year for his work ethic and hustle. “I love football, but in wrestling if I win, it’s all mine. If I lose, it’s only mine,” he said. “And in wrestling, skill beats strength every time.”

What his coach has to say: Darrington High School football and wrestling coach Chad Monteith said Jon is a modest, down-to-earth, dedicated young man. “He trains hard and is very serious about his workouts,” Monteith said. “He is going to do well in college.”

Also at school: Jon is a good student, previously served as a class officer, is involved in Ecology Club and likes his English classes. Among his favorite books is “The Kite Runner.”

Snowboarding and hay baling: In the winter Jon enjoys snowboarding at Stevens Pass and Mount Baker. In the summer he works bringing in the hay for a local farmer.

Next year: Jon hopes to continue wrestling at Yakima Valley Community College or North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene. He plans to earn a transfer degree and go on to study physical therapy. His goal is to work with athletes. “My whole family loves sports.”
