Silent classic “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” is an epic silent movie that made Rudolph Valentino a star. The 1921 film, considered an anti-war classic of its time, will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday as part of the “Silents, Please!” film series at the historic Everett Theatre. It’s the third in a four-film series of movies starring Valentino, arguably the first male screen idol in movie history.
The fully restored movies are shown with musical accompaniment provided by Dennis James, a noted theater organist who plays the original musical scores on the theater’s 16-rank pipe organ.
The Four Horsemen, mentioned in the Book of Revelation in the Bible, are traditionally named War, Famine, Pestilence and Death and are allegories for war’s disasters.
The Valentino film is an adaptation of an anti-war novel by Spanish writer Vicente Blasco-Ibanez set during World War I. Valentino stars as a man who finds himself in the trenches defending France while fighting members of his own family on the other side.
