Taking a shot at Bumbershoot

The Dead Are Judged from Marysville have qualified for Sound Off!, giving them a shot at the stage at Bumbershoot 2008.

Those happy go lucky kids are set to join a bunch of other acts from the Pacific Northwest.

Outside of being good, these bands don’t have a ton in common. The Next Door Neighbors sound like an indie folk act fronted by Regina Spektor. The Dead Are Judged grind through metal-influenced hardcore. And Scribes rhymes. He’s a hip-hopper. Hip-hoppers rhyme a lot. I think they also hustle and flow, maybe. I’m not that into hip-hop.

The qualifying rounds now include:

Feb. 9

The Batteries, a horror punk group from Duvall

The Dead Are Judged, a hardcore metal group from Marysville

New Faces, a dance rock group from Port Townsend

Southgate, a death metal group from Pendleton, Ore.

Feb. 16

KnowMads, a hip-hop act from Seattle

The Nextdoor Neighbors, an indie folk act with an electronica element from Olympia

Pat Goodwin, an indie folk act from Seattle

Scribes, a hip hop act from Seattle

Feb. 23

Deer City, an electro lounge act from Issaquah

Kusikia, an experimental indie group from Tacoma

Man Down Medic, an indie pop group from Seattle

Shotty, an indie rock group from Kirkland

Sound Off! gives young Pacific Northwest bands — from around 17 to 21 years old — a chance to win a time slot at Bumbershoot 2008. Winners from three qualifying rounds are scheduled to compete on March 1, with all four shows scheduled at EMP|SFM, the event’s organizer.

Tickets go on sale Jan. 17, can be purchased by calling 206-770-2702 and are $10 for the general public or $7 for students and EMP|SFM members.

If I had to handicap this whole thing, only having listened to the bands and not really knowing what they’ll do on a stage, I’d say Man Down Medic could go all the way. That’s just a gut hunch, though.
