Taproot Theatre’s rendition of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is set in a Moroccan nightclub where the use of a small cast and a four-member band enhance the clarity of the story of Joseph, his 11 jealous brothers and the crafty Pharaoh.
The show opens tonight in Seattle and runs through Aug. 11.
Written by the duo of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice and directed by Scott Nolte, the nightclub scene is set in the 1930s. An intimate atmosphere is created by using just four women and six men to play more than 19 characters.
The Sunday Times of London called “Joseph” “the best kind of feel-good show, unashamed, warm-hearted and irresistible.”
“Brigadoon”: Another Broadway musical that also warms the heart, “Brigadoon” is the story of a man who finds a magical Scottish town where his faith and love are tested.
The classic is presented by Lyric Light Opera of the Northwest at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon starting tonight, with weekend shows through July 29.
The Tony Award-winning music of Lerner and Loewe is a sweet backdrop for the scenes set in an enchanting Scottish village that disappears into the Highland mist and returns for only one day every 100 years.
A weary traveler and a Scottish lass find each other while classic melodies such as “Almost Like Bein’ in Love,” “The Heather on the Hill,” and “I’ll Go Home with Bonnie Jean” inspire their journey.
“Princess Ida”: The Seattle Gilbert &Sullivan Society presents “Princess Ida,” possibly one of the first feminists, which opens tonight at the Bagley Wright Theatre at the Seattle Center and runs though the week of July 23.
As part of its 53rd anniversary, the society is presenting the story about a radical feminist who renounces men, then defies institutional norms and starts a women’s university.
Unfortunately for the princess and her feminist stance, she was betrothed as a child to a man who is now all grown up and who decides, wink wink, to ignore her renouncements.
