Here are capsules and links to our reviews of the movies that are playing at major local theaters this Thanksgiving:
“The Muppets” (new, 3 stars): For fans of the felt-covered puppets, this new feature is a welcome throwback: The tongue-in-cheek humor, cute songs, and good cheer are all in place. Kermit and his pals must reunite for a telethon, so lots of silly performances and jokes are in store. The human cast is led by Jason Segele and Amy Adams, both overdoing the twinkle.
“The Descendants” (new, 3 1/2 stars): A soft, very low-key look at a stressful moment in the life of a well-to-do Hawaiian (George Clooney) suddenly faced with a variety of family challenges. Every scene offers tragedy and comedy in equal doses, and Clooney provides the effortless-looking grace notes of a born movie star.
“Hugo” (new, 3 1/2 stars): Martin Scorsese lets his love of film bring us a tender, charming movie. Asa Butterfield is an orphan who must emerge from his hideyhole for wondrous experiences. With Chloe Moretz, Ben Kingsley and Sacha Baron Cohen.
“J. Edgar” (2 1/2 stars): Clint Eastwood’s even-handed look at the life of the weirdo director of the FBI, focusing on his power-brokering and his longtime relationship with his assistant (Armie Hammer). Leonardo DiCaprio brings great enthusiasm and commitment to the role of J. Edgar Hoover, but somehow this serious performance seems to be searching for the right movie.
“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” (2 stars): We’re almost at the close of Stephenie Meyer’s vampire epic, with regular gal Kristen Stewart finally marrying vampire Robert Pattinson, as wolf-boy suitor Taylor Lautner gnashes his teeth. New director Bill Condon adds some actual horror edge to the proceedings, but overall the movie is so thoroughly weird it will only work for diehard fans.
“Happy Feet 2” (2 stars): This sequel to a delightful and charming movie is little more than an excuse to sell toys. A funny riff with Brad Pitt as the voice of a krill, is an unrelated story. With the voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams and Hank Azaria.
“Immortals” (1 star): Even a talented director and some brawn can’t save this boring and shallow film. Mickey Rouke looks less like an ancient, evil king than a current-day homeless man. The costumes are especially eyebrow-lifting. With Henry Cavill, Luke Evans and Kellen Lutz.
“Jack and Jill” (1 star): An unfunny indulgence for Adam Sandler playing dual roles as twin brother and sister. Al Pacino is fascinating, if not funny. Even a mass of cameos can’t conjure up much fun. With Katie Holmes and Eugenio Derbez.
“Puss in Boots” (3 1/2 stars): In what may be the best animated film of 2011, Antonio Banderas vamps his role as the voice of Puss in Boots, a suave and elegant gato. The comedy comes from the characters, not lazy pop-culture riffs.
“Tower Heist” (3 stars): This Robin Hood caper comedy is a little clunky, but who cares? The top-notch cast, including a funny-again Eddie Murphy, hit close to home when they seek revenge against the big shot who swindled them out of their life savings. With Ben Stiller, Tea Leoni, Alan Alda, Gabourey Sidibe and Michael Pena.
