The first ever Food Network Doughnut Challenge aired last night featuring two regional fried dough favorites.
Sara Beth Russert, a baker at Mighty O, faced off against crosstown heavy weight Top Pot Doughnut co-founder Mark Klebek and two other doughnut bakers (one from Denver, the other from the southeast).
The show was typical Food Network camp with a panel of judges and a glitzy host. During first round bakers had to produce two doughnuts, one with a secret ingredient unveiled at the last minute. (Russert was handed Greek flavors and turned out an olive oil doughnut that didn’t impress.)
Round two included the building of a doughnut centerpiece sculpture. Who thinks of these things anyway?!
Bottom line is that we here in the Northwest should be proud that we had two competitors on a national stage frying rings of dough.
SPOILER ALERT!!
What’s even cooler is that Russert won with no-less than vegan doughnuts. Her French Toast flavor was a hit as was her cherry studded fritter. You can’t shake powdered sugar at that.
The show repeats on Tuesday at 11 p.m., Wednesday at 2 a.m., and Saturday at 6 p.m.
