Here she comes: Rozanne, the Perennial Plant Association’s plant of the year, is a jewel-toned geranium. It was chosen for its large violet-blue flowers combined with deep green, lightly marbled foliage. Association members select a perennial suitable for a wide range of climates, low maintenance and provides multiseason interest. For more information, go to www.perennialplant.org.

How does your garden purr: Purrfect Pals, a no-kill, cat-only shelter based in Arlington, is looking for some exceptional gardens to feature on a garden tour in the Marysville, north Everett, Lake Stevens, Arlington, Smokey Point, Stanwood or adjacent areas. The tour is planned for late May or June and would promote a cats and garden theme as a fundraiser for the cat shelter, which adopts out 2,000 or more cats every year. For more information, go to www.purrfectpals.org, call Kathy at 360-618-0417 or e-mail reception@purrfectpals.org.

Early warning buzzer: The 2008 Seattle Home Show will be Feb. 16 to 24 at Qwest Field Event Center, 1000 Occidental Ave. S., Seattle. This year’s show will feature more than 600 displays of home and garden products, daily seminars, plus an idea street of furnished and landscaped model homes. Admission is $10 for adults, $6 for ages 60 and older, $3 for ages 7 to 15, and free for ages 6 and younger. Tickets will be sold at the door and online at www.SeattleHomeShow.com. Call 425-467-0960 with questions.

Dispose of old medicines: Pharmaceutical chemicals, when released into the air or water, are not good for the environment. Scientists have found birth-control-pill hormones, pain relievers, acetaminophen and hydrocodone and the diabetes-control drug metformin in Washington state waters.

Fortunately, there’s a solution to this problem. Group Health Cooperative accepts unused prescription and over-the-counter drugs at drop boxes for environmentally safe drug disposal, including the clinic locations in Everett and Lynnwood.

Narcotics, such as codeine and oxycodone, will not be accepted and should be mixed with kitty litter or coffee grounds and thrown in the garbage. Never flush medication down the toilet.

See a complete list of drop-off sites with addresses at www.medicinereturn.com. Call the Group Health pharmacy in Everett at 425-261-1560 for details.
