Local designer wins: The Northwest’s top designers are recognized every year at the Seattle Design Center’s annual Northwest design awards gala. This year Stephen Marshall-Ward of Stephen Marshall Design based in Lynnwood was among the winners.
Marshall-Ward, featured for his residential design work in The Herald’s Home &Garden section earlier this year, won a second place award for best commercial design for a major remodeling project at Queen Anne United Methodist Church in Seattle.
Marshall-Ward was credited for turning “a drab, monochromatic, 100-year-old sanctuary into a flexible, inspiring and beautiful worship space for the 21st century,” including new lighting, sound- and video-projection systems, furnishings and art, including 1,200 hand-blown glass doves suspended on delicate stainless-steel cables to signify the presence of the Holy Spirit descending into the room.
The 5,200-square-foot design project included remodeling the entry and lobby as well as restrooms, a family room and hallways, and making all parts of the building ADA accessible. The Seattle Design Center’s annual competition recognizes interior designers whose work has made a significant contribution to the industry.
Going Green at the Beach: Dave and Anna Porter of Stanwood are building one of the greenest homes on the West Coast and they are inviting green-curious folks to take a peek inside. The Porters, who have titled their project “Going Green at the Beach,” aim to set a record by meeting the requirements of five residential green-building certification programs, all documented on their Web site, www.goinggreenatthebeach.com. Tour the Porters’ home from 1 to 5 p.m. Nov. 3 and 4 and Nov. 10 and 11. Admission is free, but organizers ask for a $5 donation for local charities. Arrange a private tour for groups of 10 or more by calling Green Dog Enterprises at 206-883-6688.
