Thanks to two (so far, at least) Forum readers, it looks like a special 80th birthday dinner at a German restaurant may well be in the cards for Doris Zvolensky of Oak Harbor.
First, Pat Wehmeyer of Arlington says, “Too bad Doris can’t go a little farther than 50 miles. The Black Forest Steakhouse in Everson is fantastic, but it is 66 miles from Oak Harbor.’’
And Dan Harrity of Lynnwood tells us, “Regarding Mrs. Zvolensky’s inquiry for a German restaurant, let me recommend a wonderful little place called the Budapest Bistro. The fare is mostly Hungarian, but there are numerous German dishes on offer as well (spaetzle, wiener schnitzel, cabbage rolls, etc.).
“It’s located at 12900 Mukilteo Speedway in Everett, and the telephone number is 425-513-9846.
“I really can’t say enough about this little place. I’ve lived in the Puget Sound region for going on 20 years now, but I was born and raised in Pennsylvania, where a lot of the foods that this restaurant serves are common fare in most households, but are almost impossible to find out here. So it’s a real taste of home for me.
“This restaurant is not fancy (it’s a small place with a few tables in a strip mall). However, it’s very homey and it’s a true mom-and-pop eatery in the old-fashioned sense. The proprietress, Elizabeth, makes all the food from scratch with her own hands, and the menu varies by the day.
“I included their phone number because wiener schnitzel is not offered every day, and if Mrs. Zvolensky wants to order that for her birthday meal, it will pay to call ahead and verify whether it will be on the menu when she decides to visit.’’
Dan adds, “Best wishes to Mrs. Zvolensky on this landmark birthday,’’ wishes we here at the Forum echo.
Now, out to the kitchen to make melt-in-the-mouth macaroons, courtesy of Kirkland reader Gloria Carpenter.
“I found this recipe in an old Pillsbury homemade cookies booklet from October 1989,’’ she says. “It could be the Pillsbury bake-off recipe Emma Suryan is looking for.’’
Coconut macaroons
2egg whites
1/3 cup sugar
2tablespoons flour
Dash salt
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
2cups coconut
Heat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and lightly flour a cookie sheet.
In a medium bowl, beat egg whites lightly. Add sugar, flour, salt and almond extract; blend well. Stir in coconut.
Drop dough by tablespoonful 2 inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 13 to 17 minutes or until set and lightly browned. Immediately remove from cookie sheet.
Makes 12.
