Critics have described the “Threepenny Opera” as one of the best examples of musical theater ever done.
The musical is being performed by the Seattle Shakespeare Company at Intiman Theater. The show explores the underworld as dapper criminal Macheath slashes throats and treats women badly. The show features the song “Mac the Knife.”
The Shakespeare Co.’s Stephanie Shine said she has seen “Threepenny Opera” twice and has been fascinated, enticed, and “even haunted” for 30 years.
“I remember a deep visceral response both to Weill’s music and Brecht’s unrelenting examination of social structures,” Shine said. “I would not have imagined, coming upon the play frequently in my early life that it would take 30 years for me to live with it again.”
You don’t have to wait 30 years to see this show which runs Thursdays through Sundays through March 6 at Intiman Theatre, 201 Mercer St., Seattle. Call 206-733-8222 or visit The Seattle Shakespeare Company for tickets and information.
