Sam Cooke was right: Some of the best things in life are free.
On Saturday, I experienced that when a special jazz ensemble unit of the U.S. Navy Band, who are on tour from Washington, D.C., rocked the Everett Civic Auditorium with Big Band hits, blues and really exceptional original compositions.
The Commodores produce excellent jazz, popular and patriotic music. Their Saturday show was energetic, even athletic in parts, and truly made me feel like living in a Navy town really does pay off.
I did mention this was a free concert, and it was one of the best concerts I’ve heard in a while because there was a lot of skilled musicianship under those uniforms. My family and I got in early and had great seats, which was good because the auditorium was packed.
Our 8 year old remained transfixed through most of the show. He was also pleased to receive a special U.S. Navy pen and lanyard, which he happily wore around his neck.
If you missed Saturday’s concert, that’s a shame. But there’s more on the way.
Navy Band Northwest will feature a collection of traditional and popular holidy music selections during its “Navy Band Northwest’s Holiday Concert” at 7 p.m. Dec. 16 at Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave., Everett.
Did I mention this concert is also free.
