Opera preview: The latest edition of Seattle Opera’s free preview series focuses on Richard Wagner’s stormy, captivating tale of ghostly love at 2 p.m. April 22 in the Everett Public Library Auditorium, 2702 Hoyt Ave. No knowledge of music or opera is expected. Seattle Opera performs The Flying Dutchman from May 7 to 21. A ship’s captain is cursed to sail the seas forever, permitted to land once every seven years, with only the love of a faithful woman able to lift the curse. He seems doomed to sail forever, but enter Senta, a romantic Norwegian girl who would release the Dutchman. This is opera, so the story doesn’t end well. Wagner’s score is considered a landmark in the history of Romantic art. This is a new production for Seattle Opera. The costumes and setting are unusual, reminiscent of the rise of Nazi Germany in the 1930s. More about the Seattle Opera production is at www.seattleopera.org/on-stage/the-flying-dutchman.
