Theater, dance and comedy shows around Snohomish County

THEATER

Village Theatre: Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave.; 425-257-8600 or www.villagetheatre.org/everett. The season concludes with “Hairspray,” which opens July 6. Tracy Turnblad is a big girl with big hair and an even bigger dream: to dance her way onto national TV, dethrone the reigning teen queen, win the affections of the local heartthrob, and integrate a TV network… all without denting her ‘do. The Tony-winning musical teaches us to look past skin color and size in the fight for equal rights. Tickets are $70 general, $65 seniors and $55 youth.

Edmonds Driftwood Players: Wade James Theatre, 950 Main St., Edmonds; www.edmondsdriftwoodplayers.org or 425-774-9600. The ninth annual “Festival of Shorts” is July 6-8 and features four performances, eight casts and eight short plays. These eight never-before-produced plays have been selected from nearly 200 submissions. Shows are 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $20 adult, $18 junior, senior and military. Vote for the contest winner. The 2018-19 season is as follows: “Something’s Afoot,” “Peter and the Starcatcher,” “Silent Sky,” “The Addams Family” and “Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily.” Season tickets, for all five main-stage shows, is $120 general and $108 seniors, students and military.

Shakespeare in the Park: Free performance of “The Merry Wives of Windsor” by Seattle Shakespeare Co. 7 p.m. July 18 at the Lynndale Park Amphitheater, 18827 72nd Ave. W., Lynnwood; www.lynnwoodwa.gov. Parking available at Lynndale Elementary. Bring blankets and cushions for seating. Space for camping chairs is very limited. Up next: “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” July 19; “King Lear,” July 25 and 26. Also: “The Merry Wives of Windor,” 3 p.m. July 22 at Edmonds City Park, 600 Third Ave. S., Edmonds.

Red Curtain: The Red Curtain Arts Center, 9315 State Ave., Suite J, Marysville (in the Goodwill shopping center, behind the Everett Community College cosmetology school). Star Trek meets Shakespeare in the new play “M’aQ’betH,” opening July 27. Alex DeRoest and Nick Poling, the masterminds behind “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” and “The Adventures of Lewis and Clark,” have adapted Shakespeare’s play into a Klingon one. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $18 adults, $15 seniors, students and military. Phoenix Theatre: The Phoenix Theatre, 9673 Firdale Ave., Edmonds. Call 206-533-2000 or go to www.tptedmonds.org. The 2018-19 season includes “The Underpants,” “Twist of the Magi,” “Ripcord,” “Women in Jeopardy” — plus a comedy that has yet to be named. Season tickets, for all five performances, are $110 for adults, $98 for seniors, students and military.

Lake Stevens’ Shakespeare in the Park: Free performance of “Twelfth Night” by Last Leaf Productions at 4 p.m. Aug. 12, Eagle Ridge Park, 10020 Lundeen Parkway, Lake Stevens; www.lakestevenswa.gov. Up next: “King Lear,” 4 p.m. Aug. 26.

YOUTH THEATER

Ludus Performing Arts: Snohomish County PUD Auditorium, 2320 California St. Everett; 425-239-6627; www.ludusperformingarts.org. The youth theater company performs Monty Python’s “Spamalot” at 7 p.m. July 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28, 2 p.m. July 14, 15, 22 and 28. Lovingly ripped off from the classic film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” the comedy musical retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French taunters. Tickets are $12 to $20.

“Shrek the Musical”: The Edmonds Driftwood Players Teen Troupe presents the musical based on the movie “Shrek” July 20-22 at the Wade James Theatre, 950 Main St., Edmonds. Performances are 8 p.m. July 20 and 21, and 2 p.m. July 21 and 22. A green ogre finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue in this fairy tale of misfits. Tickets are $15. Village Kidstage: Cope Gillette Theatre, 2730 Wetmore Ave., Everett; 425-257-8600 or villagetheatre.org/everett/kidstage-everett.php. The award-winning musical, “Bring It On,” running July 12-22, is inspired by the hit film. When a star cheerleader gets transferred to an inner-city school without a cheer squad, she befriends the tough and hardworking dance team to try to prepare for the ultimate competition — the national championships.

DANCE

Ho’ike: Celebrate 11 years of hula and aloha with the 11th annual Ho’ike at 4 p.m. July 8 at Edmonds Center for the Arts, 410 Fourth Ave. N., Edmonds. Featuring the dancers of Hula O Lehalani and the live music of Kupono. Tickets are $12. “Ho’ike” means show or display in the Hawaiian language and is a time for dancers and musicians to exhibit all they’ve learned. More at www.edmondscenterforthearts.org.

COMEDY

Everett Comedy Night: Emory’s on Silver Lake, 11830 19th Ave. SE, Everett, hosts a second-Sunday monthly comedy night with Cory Michaelis. Tickets are $10. The evening begins at 8:30 p.m. and features touring and local comedians. To reserve a table, call 425-337-7772. Next show is July 8.

Tony V’s Garage: Monday Night Comedy is a weekly comedy showcase and open mic at the garage, 1716 Hewitt Ave., Everett. Features regional comedians working out their longer sets and local amateurs trying new material. Next showcase is July 9. No cover. Sign up at 7:30 p.m.; show is at 8 p.m.

Tim Noah’s Thumbnail Theater: The Thumb hosts Crackpot Comedy Cavalcade 7:30 p.m. July 14 at the theater, 1211 Fourth St., Snohomish. This family-friendly sketch and improvisational comedy is titled “The Evolution of a Comedy Troupe.” Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children. A Night of Improv: Exit 192 Improv will perform improvisational comedy 8 p.m. July 14 at the Historic Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby Ave. This adults-only show is completely unscripted and inspired by suggestions from the audience. Jamco Comedy: Duane Goad headlines this stand-up comedy show at 8 p.m. July 21 at Historic Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby Ave. Duane was a finalist in the Seattle International Comedy Competition. He has opened for Jim Gaffigan, Flight of the Conchords, Bill Burr, Brad Garrett and Maria Bamford. Tickets are $20. Call 425-258-6766 or go to www.historiceveretttheatre.org.

“Summer Shorts:” Laugh out loud with “Summer Shorts,” featuring seven 10-minute comedic plays by local playwrights.
