Chris Cagle, Bucky Covington, Black Crowes, Casting Crowns, Kid Rock and Sara Evans bring country and rock to the Puyallup Fair on six of seven nights, starting tonight.

Cagle, Covington and Evans take care of the country corner, Black Crowes and Kid Rock handle the rock, and Casting Crowns adds a Christian sensibility.

“I Breathe In, I Breathe Out” was a U.S. country cart-topper for the Louisiana-born Cagle earlier in his career, and “What Kinda Gone” peaked in third place early in 2008.

Covington’s widest claim to fame was as an American Idol, but he also claimed the top spot on the Billboard Top Country Albums with his self-titled recording, and three singles from that CD made the Hot Country Songs charts.

Singer-songwriter Evans has had several top-10 country hits, including some chart-toppers. Most recently, she won the Academy of Country Music Awards’ Top Female Vocalist category (2006) and a spot in BMI Country Awards’ 50 Most Performed Country Songs (2007, “You’ll Always Be My Baby”).

The blues-oriented rock band Black Crowes has made VH1’s list of top 100 artists playing hard rock, and this year’s “Warpaint” CD made it to the fifth spot on Billboard.

Dove- and Grammy-winning Casting Crowns performs soft-rock Christian music. The band has had eight songs in the top-three spots of Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs.

Kid Rock and band will bring his rock-rap style to the fair. His single “All Summer Long” made the top-30 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts in seven other countries.

STBG: Hope is not limited to politicians; it’s shared by musicians wanting to break into the music business. STBG is led by Mark Pollard, a Washington state rapper. His progressive introspective hip-hop and trip hop was a hit the last time he performed in Everett. STBG stands for Switches to Boy Genius, and the sound is progressive from heavy rock to textures.

Jewel: The three-time Grammy-nominated folk-pop-country singer and songwriter sticks to the contemporary style. This year, “Stronger Woman” rose to the 13th spot on the Hot Country Songs chart. She’s also acted in a few TV shows.

Santana: Holding down spot No. 15 in Rolling Stone magazine’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list, Santana started making world music before the phrase existed. The Grammy-winning (10 times) is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Brothers of the Baladi: The quintet’s CD-release party is for “Just Do What’s Right,” a 15-song disc that includes Arabic, Persian, Spanish, Celtic and Tunisian songs, six original tunes plus a cover of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” with Middle Eastern rhythms.

Out and about: Sister Hazel is named after a woman who ran a mission in Gainesville, Fla., for those down on their luck. The band brings elements of Southern rock, alt rock and folk (Tuesday, Showbox Market) … Additional tickets to the Carrie Underwood concert have been released (Sept. 19, Puyallup Fair) … The free Live Aloha Hawaiian Cultural Festival is a first, with music, Hawaiian exhibits, films, workshops and food (Sunday, Center House, Seattle Center) …

Korea’s traditional Harvest Moon Festival includes music, dance and demonstrations (Saturday, Center House, Seattle Center) … Grammy-nominated pop band Backstreet Boys have more than a dozen top-40 hits and sold about 100 million records (Saturday, Marymoor) …

G Love and Special Sauce perform music from this year’s release, “Superhero Brother” (Sunday, Marymoor) … The indie rock band TV on the Radio always keeps its fans guessing, given its penchant for various genres, including a cappella, soul and free jazz (Saturday, Showbox SoDo) …
