Thrift shops a great haunt for Halloween costumes

When it comes to Halloween, the search for that perfect costume for many people is just as important, if not more so, than the search for the perfect pumpkin or the spookiest decorations.

This can be said not only for children, but also for adults who have parties to attend.

In that spirit, local Goodwill stores are offering consultations for costume-seekers of all ages each Saturday until Oct. 31, for those adventurous souls who not only want the most creative costumes, but who have decided to assemble the costumes themselves.

In addition, there will be a Halloween Family Fun Celebration from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at all the retail stores. The event includes free refreshments, drawings for prizes, and children’s games and activities.

Staff members offer these tips for those making their own costumes: Don’t look for costume ideas only in the clothing aisles; inspiration can start with an unusual items from everywhere in the stores, including the housewares section. Plain jeans or T-shirts make good canvases on which to paint or draw designs. Finishing touches such as hats, belts and makeup are often the most striking parts of costumes, so don’t be afraid to use them.
