Kindergarten
To the un-initiated, kindergarten is that bittersweet time of year that begins somewhere around early September when the young fledglings leave the nest to launch their journey through the educational labyrinth. Often newspapers run cute pictures of terrified kids heading off to their first day of school.
Ah. How poignant.
Well us parents know the journey to kindergarten really started months ago in early March.
This un-storybook-like beginning was launched with at least two hours of paperwork, a trip to the designated school to drop off said paperwork and possibly –depending on how Type A you are – a trip back home to get the correct documents and then a return trip to the school to complete the paperwork.
Ah. Now your child can head off to kindergarten.
No. Not so fast.
If your child happens to go to a school that offers full-time kindergarten you are pretty much set.
If however, your school needs a certain number of students in order to offer full-time kindergarten, then you are not so set.
Jackson Elementary, for instance, won’t offer full-time kindergarten unless they have 22 kids signed up. At last count, they only had 15.
Also View Ridge Elementary doesn’t have enough kids for full-time kindergarten either. Both these schools are in Everett.
What will happen is anyone’s guess. Everett School District is talking about combining Jackson and View Ridge into one full-time kindergarten program but nothing has been finalized as of this week.
Meanwhile, Jackson is still planning a meet-and-greet for new kindergarteners and their parents at 5:30 p.m. June 10 at Jackson Elementary, 3700 Federal Ave.
Perhaps all of us anxious parents will learn something then.
