Tribute bands: Live and (almost) famous

We’re a week from summer and already the tribute season has begun.

Tribute bands, that is.

Name a rock band that the baby boomers liked and you can probably find a regional act playing that music on a local stage.

Cherry Cherry plays Neil Diamond. Randy Hansen puts on a killer Jimi Hendrix show. Heart by Heart includes some of the original members of Heart.

Alive She Cried is a Doors tribute band set to perform Saturday at the Historic Everett Theatre along with Janis Lives, a tribute to Janis Joplin, and The Zeppmen, a Led Zeppelin tribute.

Historic Everett Theatre hosts tribute acts through the year and Tulalip Casino’s Canoes Cabaret offers free tribute shows, such as this Sunday’s concert by Third Stage, a tribute to Boston.

But what really brings out the tribute groups are the summer music festivals and concert series.

See them at fairs, festivals and fundraisers, such as the one Hell’s Belles, the female AC/DC tribute band, is playing Saturday at Loco Billy’s Wild Moon Saloon in Stanwood to benefit the Northwest Music Foundation.

What makes tribute bands popular?

Andy Vollmer of Snohomish, who plays guitar and provides the lead vocals for the Tom Petty tribute band called Petty Thief, said people love to sing along. His band plays the Historic Everett Theatre on June 27.

“We try to play as many of the popular hits that everybody knows,” he said in a Herald story last summer. “Tributes always do really well because the music is recognizable.”

And tribute bands keep the music going — played live.

This summer’s tribute concerts include:

Alive She Cried, 8 p.m. June 13, Historic Everett Theatre.

Hell’s Belle’s: 8 p.m. June 13, Loco Billy’s Wild Moon Saloon, Stanwood.
