What: A steep ascent that meets the Pacific Crest Trail just south of Stevens Pass.
Where: On U.S. 2, drive 13 miles east of Skykomish, turn right onto Tunnel Creek Road (Forest Service Road 6095) at the big switchback on U.S. 2. Follow 6095 for 1.5 miles, staying left at the junctions. Parking at the trailhead is tight.
Length: 3.2 miles round trip.
Difficulty: Moderate. It’s a thigh-burner that marches continuously uphill, but the trail is short enough that most hikers should be able to reach the top.
Beginning elevation: 3,100 feet.
Ending elevation: 4,400 feet.
Map: Green Trails 176
Permits: A Northwest Forest Pass is required for parking.
Contact: Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Skykomish Ranger Station, 360-677-2414.
Notes: While the trail itself is nothing to write home about, it does offer a steep, short workout with a nice reward at the top: Hope Lake. Once you reach the Pacific Crest Trail at the top, you can turn north and walk half a mile to Mig Lake, or turn south and climb the ridge for some nice mountain vistas, as well as a little longer hike.
