Going to see the UW men’s basketball team tonight against Oregon and not sure of what I’m going to see.
The Huskies are 9-7 and have to win this one to avoid falling into an 0-4 hole in Pac-10 play. This weekend is cruicial if te team wants to crash the NCAA Tournament and probably even (yuck!) the NIT.
The Huskies have won their last six against the Ducks in Hec Ed. But that’s about the only positive thing going for them. They need guys to step up to on offense help Jon Brockman. Quincy Pondexter would be a candidate, but he’s been inconsistent. Ryan Appleby is another, but he had a horrible series against the LA schools. Not only that, but conference teams know Appleby well and know they can’t leave him alone from 45 feet on in.
Washington has struggled shooting from inside, outside and from the foul line. Romar has experimented with starting lineups and hasn’t yet found one that’s shown any consistency. They’ve gone three conference games without scoring more than 55 points in any. This is hardly what we’re used to seeing at Hec Ed.,
Logic says the program is on a down cycle. The Huskies haven’t reached the status of an annual power and this just happens to be the low end of the cycle. I like their young guys, but they’ll take time to develop. Pondexter is the lone member of his class still on the team, which happens but is unfortunate and hurts the program.
I hope it’s a good game. It more fun to write about than a blowout on either side.
