So I”m at Hec Ed again, lately my home away from home. This time it’s for the UW-WSU women’s basketball game.
Some of you know the subplot. It’s former Huskies coach June Daugherty and assistant coach Mike Daugherty’s return to their old stomping grounds, where they put out teams for 11 seasons before being dismissed by then-athletic director Todd Turner. No ugly clashes scheduled, as Turner was let go by UW president Mark Emmert a couple of months ago.
Oh, how it turns.
Interesting scheduling. A women’s basketball game on Super Bowl Sunday? Sure they’re 21/2 hours apart, but that cuts into a lot of traditional-home tailgating time (translated: indiscriminant swilling of inflammable liquids).
My estimate: Roughly 12 people will be in the stands.
Anyway, that’s kind of a preview of Monday’s column. I’ll have conversations with, I hope, both Daughertys. I’m told former UW star Kayla Burt will be in attendance, so I’m hoping to chat her up as well.
Burt, by the way, now is an assistant coach at the University of Portland, replacing former teammate Loree Payne, now a UW assistant.
— LATER —
OK, I was wrong. It’s National Girls and Women in Sports Day and about 4,000 youth players are here, wearing their basketball uniforms. Shows what I know.
So sue me.
