The Flaming Lips, who play Redmond on Aug. 21, trotted out two new tracks at a Chicago festival appearance on July 19.

The songs, “Silver Trembling Hands” and “Convinced of the Hex,” are expected to be on the group’s next album, “Embryonic,” which has yet to receive a release date.

“Embryonic” is shaping up to be an odd album, and not in the typical Flaming Lips sense of things. The group announced it will be their first double disc, and apparently both MGMT and Karen O will make guest appearances — itself a bit unusual for the group, which hasn’t featured big-name guests on past albums.

Time will tell if the album ends up being “Soft Bulletin”-styled genius or another ho-hum “At War with the Mystics.”

The Flaming Lips — “Silver Trembling Hands” — Live

This raucous song, now available as a digital single, doesn’t exactly find the Lips at its “Soft Bulletin” best. Instead, it splits the difference between the rocking moments of “Clouds Taste Metallic” and the outro-artistry of the “Christmas on Mars” soundtrack. What appears to be the group’s entire Pitchfork Music Festival set can be seen here.

Kings of Leon—“Notion”—Live

The Nashville band made its way to the “Today” show on July 30 to play three songs from its commercial breakthrough, “Only by the Night,” which recently crossed the platinum mark. The group’s tackled the midtempo rocker “Notion,” satisfying fans and journalists alike. (Look for the 1:30 mark, when Anne Curry closes her eyes, properly taking in all that righteous rocking.)

Matt &Kim – “Daylight” – Video

This duo got a well-deserved boost after Bacardi decided to run “Daylight” in a major mojito ad campaign. No doubt that commercial helped push the song onto the iTunes single chart, where it’s now at No. 54. (They also have a video for “Lessons Learned” — arguably a better song — where they strip naked in Times Square. The clip blurs anything inappropriate, but you still may want to watch it after work, just to avoid any stares.)
