Seattle artist Toshi Asai presents a two-part exhibit that blends visual and literary arts; part one (in the display case) contains “Sakka Series” a collection of famous, significant modern Japanese authors; part two (in the gallery) includes a form of collage-like drawing and painting done during an intensive 30-hour drawing-performance; the show is up through Oct. 29; meet the artist from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20.

The Pacific Northwest Needle Arts Guild will display more than 40 works of needlecraft during their 2011 Fiber Show through Dec. 31, featuring techniques such as embroidery, quilting, felting, crocheting, knitting, basketry and cross-stitching. Raven Rocks Gallery: 765 Wonn Road, C101, Greenbank, 360-222-0102, www.ravenrocksstudio.com. “The Fabric of Imagination” includes the Artwork of Anne Niles Davenport and Richard Engstrom. Engstrom uses acrylic paint to build images that invite the viewer into a rich world of light, texture and imagery; Davenport is a fiber artist who uses large computer-assisted production looms with specialized software to integrate her complex patterns into an assortment of hand woven scarves and shawls; show runs through Nov. 2.

The Schack Art Center: 2919 Hoyt Ave., Everett; 425-259-5050; www.schack.org; “This Fragile Skin” exhibit explores the human form in kilnformed glass. Artist Silvia Levenson comments on the fragility of our bodies by the number of bottles in our medicine cabinets; artists Mel Douglas and Jessica Loughlin use sumptuous surfaces, like our own skin, that are tactile, yet not to be touched; there will also be anthropomorphic cast works by Richard Whiteley and Alicia Lomne, along with the protective works of Steve Klein and haunting pieces by Clifford Rainey. Through Oct. 15.

Also at Schack: “Make Your Own Glass Pumpkin” with a team of glassblowers who will help participants design and blow their own glass pumpkin. All supplies provided. Reservations recommended. All ages welcome; 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 15 at Schack. Cost: $45.

Seagrass Gallery at Islander’s Restaurant: 848 N. Sunrise Blvd., Camano Island; www.seagrassgallery.com. Bev Paulson is a watercolor artist with a sense of humor, along with a keen sense of form and design. Through October.

The Sisters: 2804 Grand Ave., Everett; 425-252-0480; 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Artist Janie Olsen’s voice is recognizable in every work whether whimsical or mystical and she has a versatile portfolio — fantasy, animals, illustrations, portraits, from large scale to miniatures. Up through Nov. 10.

Whidbey Art Gallery: 220 Second St., Langley; 360-221-7675; www.WhidbeyArtists.com; open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Painter and mixed media artist Shirley Ashenbrenner is the featured artist for October. Ashenbrenner’s abstract artwork ranges from paintings in oil, acrylic, mixed media to encaustic and assemblage.

“Paint Me a River Too!”: Features the work of more than 100 local artists and reflects their personal view of Skagit history in all types of media at the Skagit County Historical Museum, 501 S Fourth St., La Conner. Museum of Northwest Art: 121 S. First St., La Conner; noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and Monday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; 360-466-4446; www.museumofnwart.org; “The First 30 Years: MoNA Collects,” is a celebration of the museum’s first 30 years with an exhibition that fills every gallery on both floors. This comprehensive exhibit honors more than 200 donors to the permanent collection; on display through Jan. 1.

“Faces — Art Inspired by Paul Klee”: The Schack Art Center features artwork by Sunnycrest Elementary students from the Lake Stevens School District. The exhibit, curated by the school’s art docent Rebecca DeFrag, was done by students in Chad Brandt’s fifth grade class who brought geometric faces to life after being inspired by Swiss artist Paul Klee. Using faces as subjects, students worked with artist grade paper and pastel sticks. The exhibit runs through Oct. 20 at the Emerging Young Artist Gallery in the Schack Art Center, 2921 Hoyt Ave., Everett. Free. Go to www.schack.org.

Seattle

Admission $7 to $13, free ages 12 and under, first Thursdays free for all. “Picturing the Artist” with several photographic portraits of and by some of the 20th century’s most important artists through Nov. 6.

Also at SAM: “Luminous: The Art of Asia” on view through Jan. 8; art from 13 Asian nations, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam and India. Do Ho Suh’s thoughtful commentary illuminates these precious works and makes them relevant for today’s contemporary audience.
