Seattle Opera’s 2007-08 season will include two firsts for the company, a couple of opera warhorses and a work by Wagner.
The company premieres are Bellini’s “I Puritani” (“The Puritans”) and the previously announced “Iphigenia in Tauris” by Gluck, a co-production with the Metropolitan Opera. Two popular operas – Puccini’s “Tosca” and Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci” – are scheduled and the season opens in August with Wagner’s “The Flying Dutchman,” featuring stars of Seattle Opera’s noted productions of Wagner’s “Ring”: baritone Greer Grimsley and soprano Jane Eaglen.
The new season marks the 25th anniversary of Seattle Opera general director Speight Jenkins, who has put Seattle Opera on the map for the quality of its productions and casting, and an international reputation for its Wagner productions. These productions will bring many noted singers to Seattle, including company favorites and a number of debuts.
The season: “The Flying Dutchman,” Aug. 4-25; “Iphigenia in Tauris,” Oct. 13-27; “I Pagliacci,” Jan. 12-26, 2008; “Tosca,” Feb. 23-March 9, 2008; “I Puritani,” May 3-17, 2008. Performances are at McCaw Hall, Seattle Center.
