Summer is made for baseball, beer, lakeside parties and fishing, and you can find them all in Milwaukee, the gateway to Wisconsin that sits on the western shore of Lake Michigan.

Check in with the Greater Milwaukee Convention and Visitors Bureau to learn about the city’s attractions and recreation. They list hotel package deals, a link to the summer “Milwaukee Trolley Loop,” and a photo gallery. Click on “Hot Links” for connections to Web sites including the Brewers and the Bucks, the Harley-Davidson Museum, and the State Fair.
For the liquid refreshment that made Milwaukee famous, click on “Visitors” to get to their collection of “Suggested Itineraries,” which includes the details you’ll need to explore a few breweries.

If you hurry, you might still have time to hit this year’s Summerfest, a big lakefront party that runs from June 24 to July 4 with food, concerts and entertainment for the kids. Click on “Entertainment” to see who’s going to be on stage.

If the lake surface isn’t your speed, go after what’s swimming below. Consult Lake Michigan Angler for information on fishing for lake trout, bass, walleye, steelhead and coho salmon. You can find several charter companies listed under “Sports/Recreation” at the convention and visitors bureau, and at Lake Michigan Fishing Guides or you can search the Web for outfits such as Leisure Time Charters.

You’ll need a fishing permit, so visit the state Department of Natural Resources for online license sales, campground reservations and “Outdoor Recreation” information that includes a section on state parks.

Go a little farther afield in the region with the help of Explore Wisconsin, where you want to click on the southeast corner of the state map. This is the Dairy State, after all, so they have a heading for “Cheese &Specialty Foods.”
