Blooms Winery on Whidbey Island has struck gold — double gold, actually — at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, with its 2008 Poetry.
The Double Gold at the largest wine competition in the country was awarded to 18 wines from Washington. More than 5,000 wines were entered from 23 states.
The 2008 Poetry is a blend of 40 percent malbec, 40 percent syrah and 20 percent cabernet sauvignon from grapes grown in the Yakima Valley.
Blooms submitted two other wines, the white Bordeaux blend called Calla, which won a silver medal, and the Bloom Vineyards cabernet sauvignon (grown on the family vineyards in Mendocino County, Calif.), which also won silver.
Ken and Virginia Bloom started the winery in 2003 on a bluff above Holmes Harbor (5302 S. East Harbor Road). The tasting room is at 5603 Bayview Road, Bay 2 of the Historic Bayview Cash Store, just off Highway 525.
