“Wild Dust”: The Phoenix Theatre has picked a filly of a comedy, so saddle up and git ready to laugh.
This tale set in the 1800s begins with the worst dust storm about to hit a small western town. It’s so bad that the men have to drive the cattle to safe territory, leaving the women on their own.
That’s when the fur starts to fly.
The women, from society women to the working class to the “working” women, have gathered at the safest place in town, which happens to be the brothel.
Cue in the handsome cowboy who enters the brothel. Nobody knows him and some speculate he may be a marshal.
That possibility is even more worrisome for the women because there’s the whole matter of the dead body they are trying to hide.
Over the span of three days, cooped up like mean hens, the women face themselves and their inner demons. The handsome cowboy adds to the tempest with his own machismo.
Will these close quarters be the cure or the calamity? Hard to say. But the Phoenix Theatre is promising a riproaring evening of laughter.
“Wild Dust” opens at 8 p.m. Friday at The Phoenix, 9673 Firdale Ave., Edmonds. Shows are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through March 3.
Tickets are $18.50 and $15.50. Call 206-533-2000 or go to www.phoenixtheatreedmonds.com.
“It Runs in the Family”: The Whidbey Playhouse is presenting one from across the pond with this British farce written by Ray Cooney.
Classically set in a hospital, the story has its share of crazies and kooks who do lots of physical comedy while never getting quite straight who is who.
There is an important pending lecture that Dr. Mortimore must give at an international conference but first he has matters to dispose of, including an ex-wife, a punkish daughter, a paternity suit and a variety of lunatics.
“It Runs in the Family” plays at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays through Feb. 17 at Whidbey Playhouse, 730 SE Midway Blvd., Oak Harbor.
Tickets are $16 each. Call 360-679-2237 or go to www.whidbeyplayhouse.com/home.html.
“Comedy of Love”: Love and laughter seems the right combination for Valentine’s Day.
So why not explore both with Unexpected Productions which will honor the day with comedy improv.
The audience will help inspire the veteran improvisers with tales of love and lust. And the six performers can surely relate because they are couples themselves.
“Comedy of Love” is 8:05 p.m. Feb. 15 and 16 at Black Box Theatre, Edmonds Community College, Mukilteo Hall, 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood.
General admission is $10. Call 425-640-1448 or go to www.blackboxedcc.org/.
