Going to hit the UW-Cal men’s basketball game today at Hec Ed and I must say that I’m curious.
I had planned to go to the Stanford game Thursday, but I wasn’t feeling well. Apparently, I was feeling better than the Huskies, some of whom indicated they weren’t completely excited to play.
Not excited to play? How does that happen? They’re getting a full ride to play basketball, they’re playing in front of a bonkers crowd and they’re fighting (sort of, as it turns out) for the post-season. How can they not be excited? I’ve not been critical of these guys or the coaching staff up to now, but that’s simply not a good reflection on either.
There’s talent here, or I’m missing something. I do think they rely too much of Jon Brockman. I keep waiting for Quincy Pondexter to break out, but it continues to be a long wait.
A big mistake a lot of people are making about UW men’s basketball is that they’re basing everything on the Roy-Robinson-Conroy-Jones years. I’ve said before that it was a pretty special group and that only elite programs consistently have those types of kids. Washington, contrary to what many in The Fringe believe, is a step down from an elite program, which means success is cyclical. There will be down years. Are the Huskies there? It certainly appears so. And if they aren’t excited to play each game, I don’t hold out a lot of hope for this crew.
It will be interesting whether they bounce back against Cal.
