Everett native Lisa Witter continues to roll on the reality show “American Candidate” on Showtime on Sunday nights. Witter is one of 10 finalists on the show, traveling across the country to try to win $200,000 and a chance to address the nation. Were tracking her progress each week.

Witter showed strong in the third episode and is starting to distinguish herself from the pack. At a press conference about jobs and the economy in Allentown, Pa., she drew on her hometown of Everett as an example of a town that has struggled with blue-collar job losses.

The finalists then had to get people throughout the state of Pennsylvania to call a toll-free phone number and cast a vote for them. Witter hooked up with a morning radio show and was followed by a television news crew that aired a piece on her with the phone number for viewers to call and support her.

In the end, she was in a tie for second place in vote-getting, with Park Gillespie who employed the local conservative talk radio station to get his message out. They were free from elimination.

Youngster Malia Lazu, who embraces and defends her tongue piercing and wild look, and the more conservative James Strock finished at the bottom and faced off in a debate before the other finalists decided the final outcome.

Lazus connections with other progressives in the race, including Witter, helped her squeak a victory and stay in the race. Strock is out.

After the debate, Lazu vowed to appear “more presidential.” This week, the candidates go to University of Virginia, where theyll get votes the old-fashioned way, by getting people to go to the booth and make a choice. Tune in at 9 p.m. Sunday on Showtime to see who gets voted off the ballot.
