Enjoy a sweet-smelling sea of purple

Partake in the Olympic Peninsula’s purple paradise with everything lavender July 15, 16 and 17 at Sequim’s annual lavender festival weekend.

You’ll see and smell a lot of purple. The plant grows like crazy at the “Lavender Capital of the U.S.” Lavender is used for cooking, cleaning, bathing, burning, decorating, drinking and inciting passion.

Dragon Fest 2016: noon to 8 p.m. July 16 and noon to 6 p.m. July 17, Chinatown-International District. Hundreds of cultural performers from across the region perform at the Pacific Northwest’s largest Pan-Asian Festival. Lion and dragon dancers, Japanese musicians, martial arts groups, Asian drill team performers and break dancers; $3 food walk with over 50 local restaurants. It’s hip to be square: Bring the family and dance July 16 at Cama Beach Historical State Park, 1880 SW Camano Dr., Camano Island.

Family square dances were a traditional part of 1930s summer activities at Cama Beach when the state park was a fishing resort. The summer dance series brings live music and experienced callers to get everyone on their feet and dancing. Dances are open to all ages and all levels. Callers will teach circle, square and contra dances.

Dances are from 7 to 9 p.m. July 16 and 30, and Aug. 27. parks.state.wa.us/folkarts.

Coming up: Alki Point art fair, July 23 and 24. Arts and crafts, vendors, activities for kids are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, with live music until 9 p.m. Saturday and 8 p.m. Sunday. Free. alkiartfair.org.
