Granite Falls’ Horse Country Farm, which teaches riding, horse care and stable management basics, offers kids a chance to write an essay and earn a discount on summer camp fees.
Camp organizer Shannon Kennedy said campers are introduced to all the skills in a one-week session and may return to sharpen their skills for as many of the nine weeks that they want. There are 20 camper places and four student counselor spots open each week. Campers pay $299 a week, and student counselors pay $409 for training and $89 each week.
Winning essays earn $15 to $100 discounts for one week of camp.
Essays must be typed — double-spaced — or legibly handwritten. Campers choose “I love horses because…” or “I want to come to horse camp because… .” Counselors write on “I want to be a senior (or junior) camp counselor because… .”
Each entry should include a cover sheet with entrant’s name, address, phone number and next grade level, along with parents’ permission to enter the contest and attend camp.
