Heads-up: Two events in Seattle next week may be worth the trip. Mystery writer Carl Hiassen brings his newest thriller from the tropics of Florida, “Star Island,” at 7 p.m. Aug. 16 to the University Book Store in the U District.

The event is free, but if you buy the book from University Book Store ($26.95) you will get a ticket guaranteeing a place in the signing line.

The bookstore is at 4326 University Way NE, Seattle. Call 800-335-7323 or check online at www.bookstore. washington.edu for more on the book-signing guidelines.

Also on the University of Washington campus next week will be a discussion with science author Mary Roach. She will discuss her book “Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void” at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at Kane Hall, Room 210.

Roach has applied her direct and intriguing approach to scientific subjects such as death, sex and the afterlife. This book reveals what the astronauts will need to do for a trip to Mars.

Tickets are free with a purchase of the book ($20.76) from the University Book Store. Otherwise it costs $5 to attend.
