A new book arrived at the newsroom. It’s called “Momnesia: A Humorous Guide to Surviving Your Post-Baby Brain,” by authors, Shannon Payette Seip and Adrienne Hedger, who brought us “If These Boobs Could Talk: A Little Humor to Pump Up the Breastfeeding Mom Boobs.”
So basically the premise of “Momnesia” is new moms have temporarily lost their brains. Also they’ve lost the ability to tell something funny from pap.
Kidding.
Maybe this book is supposed to be read just by new moms. I’m a veteran now with a 5 year old so the jokes just didn’t really work for me. I found them tired, cliché, borderline insipid and sometimes condescending. The Brain Boosters were all pretty dumb.
There are a few funny spots.
The sleep deprivation chart was good stuff. For instance, after 28 hours without sleep, the consequences are that you “genuinely believe you are Laura Ingalls Wilder and hope Pa will give you a shiny penny.”
And a couple of the “Would You Rather” sections were clever such as, “would you rather…be forced to name your baby Carrie Oakey or dress your baby in a squirrel costume every day for his first year?”
In the “That’s Entertainment” section, a fun activity for new moms is apparently hosting a competition between the two breasts when pumping milk and dressing your infant in ridiculous hats.
These few somewhat funny spots, however, don’t justify spending $12.99 before tax on this book. Take yourself to the movies instead, possibly a comedy.
