Well, it’s officially fall. And I’m not complaining. In fact, I’m excited. Don’t get me wrong. I love summer – but fall means we get to slow down. Seasons begin to change and days get a little shorter. We spend more time indoors, taking shelter from the tumultuous weather fall often brings. And I’m so ready for it. Here’s my take on why we should be excited for fall.
Live Music
Many of us take for granted the amazing amount of free outdoor live music that takes place during our (relatively short) summer. I mean, live music four days a week? That’s pretty phenomenal (big thanks to City of Everett, Snohomish County and Everett Music Initiative for making that happen)! But what about live music after summer? Luckily, some folks have been working really hard to ensure your musical needs are fulfilled.
One of those groups is Everett Music Initiative (www.everettmusicinitiative.org). They have two shows in October that promise to be fantastic. Portland’s Battleme joins Seattle greats My Goodness and Iska Dhaaf on Oct. 11. No Halloween plans? You won’t want to miss their Oct. 26 Halloween show featuring Fly Moon Royalty and DJ Action Jackson. Both shows are at Kroaker’s Pub, 3021 Rucker Ave. Tickets for these events are available here.
Looking for something a little more subdued? Maybe a long overdue date night? Nothing beats the romantic atmosphere, great food and drink, and seductive sounds that can be found at Under the Red Umbrella, 1502 Rucker Ave., on Friday’s in October. Call ahead to reserve a table. Everett is home to over a dozen other live music venues. From wineries to coffee shops, neighborhood pubs to upscale restaurants, you can find a full list of shows and venues here.
Everett Silvertips Hockey
Our hometown hockey heroes have two more home games in October. With Head Coach Kevin Constantine back at the helm, this season promises to be an exciting one. The Silvertips are at Comcast Arena (2000 Hewitt Ave.) on October 19 and 20. Grab your cowbell and cheer them on. Tickets available at www.everettsilvertips.com.
Arts and Culture:
Everett has quickly become the arts and culture capital of Snohomish County. A hot spot of performing and visual arts, you can open up to your artistic side in Everett.
Leading the charge with their stunning visual art exhibits, live glassblowing demonstrations and interactive art classes is the Schack Art Center (2921 Hoyt Ave.). Get lost in their two newest exhibits: A Glass Canvas curated by well-known Seattle based Traver Gallery and Innovation featuring 2012 Pilchuck Emerging Artists in Residence program in partnership with Pilchuck Glass School. Both exhibits open Oct. 8. Stop by during the week to catch a glimpse of artists at work. Renowned glassblowers, like Merrilee Moore, can often be found working in the hot shop. Many have already discovered a vibrant performing arts scene in Everett, too. Village Theatre has been producing inspiring performances at Everett Performing Arts Center (2710 Wetmore Ave.) for years. Their latest production, Xanadu, is set to begin on Oct. 26. Historic Everett Theatre (2911 Colby Ave.) has several great shows in October, including the Hometown Hootenanny on Oct. 12 and Illusionist Christian Ford on Oct. 18 and 19. Maybe you’re looking for thrilling high-wire stunts? Or aerial acrobatics? Ringling Bros. and Barnum &Bailey return to Comcast Arena (2000 Hewitt Ave.) Oct. 10-13 for Fully Charged. The international cast of elite performers dazzles spectators with daring tricks and awe-inspiring acts. Tickets and information available at www.comcastarenaeverett.com. Comcast Arena also hosts Endurocross on Oct. 26th. This high-octane motocross event is always a popular event.
Get Outside
Shorter days and crisp weather do not mean we need stay cooped-up inside. Fall is a beautiful time to explore. Grab a friend or your dog and head to Langus Riverfront Park.
Maybe you prefer walking with the dead? You’re in luck. The Stumble Grumble 5k zombie walk comes to Everett on Oct. 26. Registration begins at 9AM at Senator Henry M. Jackson Park (1200 State St.) in N. Everett. Details available here. (UPDATE, Oct. 25: This event has been canceled.)
Meet New Friends
And we saved a little fun for last. Now that summer craziness is behind us, we’re kicking off our monthly happy hour events again. Join Experience Everett at Brews Almighty (3011 Grand Ave.) on Thursday, Oct. 24 from 5-7 p.m. Owner Joe Kutz will show off his craft beer haven. With 16 beers (and usually a cider or two) on tap, you’re sure to find something to wet your whistle. A few of Brews’ nearby neighbors will be showing off their goods, too. Elpis&wood (3011 Grand Ave.) co-owner, Matt Moses, will be taking small groups next door to his ridiculously cool furniture shop. Their handcrafted reclaimed wood decor is more than just furniture — it’s equal parts artistic centerpiece and dynamic conversation-starter. From there, you’ll be beckoned across the street to Replay Cafe (3010 Grand Ave.), a vintage arcade featuring dozens of restored games from yesteryear. Pinball to Packman, Big Buck Hunter to DigDug, Replay will transport you back to arcades of the 80’s and 90’s. And to wrap things up, we’ll have a brief update on Pagoda Village (Grand Ave. and Wall St.), a mixed-use project on Grand Avenue that includes a 60,000 square-foot indoor public market, a 110-unit Hampton Inn by Hilton, and 220-units of residential living above the market.
