The Cascade Youth Symphony Orchestra will treat your ears and eyes with “Music in Motion,” a collaborative performance with the Cornish College of the Arts Junior Dance Company that includes Act II of Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic, “The Nutcracker.”
The family event will be directed by Gerry Jon Marsh, with choreography by Pat Hon, Christine Juarez and Shelagh Regan. In addition to Act II of “The Nutcracker,” the dance company will present a duet from “Etudes” by Karol Szymanowski, with choreography by Hon, featuring prep dance student Erica Badgeley and Joel Hathaway, a junior in the dance department at Cornish College of the Arts.
Also featured will be the youth orchestra’s Concerto Competition winner, Sol Im, a sophomore at Lynnwood’s Meadowdale High School. Im will perform Pablo di Sarasate’s virtuoso violin showpiece, “Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs).”
Founded in 1976, the Cascade Youth Symphony draws its membership from some of the most talented young musicians in north King and south Snohomish counties and beyond. Students range in age up to 21.
The Cornish College of the Arts Junior Dance Company is part of the preparatory dance division at Cornish College of the Arts and offers studies in classical ballet, modern dance and related techniques for students ages 4 to 18. Hon, who has been on the Cornish faculty since 1978, has performed extensively in Europe and choreographed for several major ballet companies.
Jambanja: Whidbey Island Center for the Arts launches its 2006-07 family series with Jambanja, a Canadian marimba, mbira, drum and dance troupe.
The arts center’s Web site says Jambanja performs “high-spirited African rhythms, fiery dance and enticing song.” The band’s music and storytelling are inspired by Zimbabwe’s Shona people, and fuse contemporary instruments with traditional marimba, gourd shakers and mbira, or hand-held percussive instruments, according to the arts center.
