Best Hearing Supplements

When you can’t hear what’s going on around you, it’s frustrating.

Nearly 25% of older adults have hearing loss. However, hearing loss affects people of all ages. Approximately 40 million adults between ages 20 and 69 have noise-induced hearing loss.

According to the World Health Organization, nearly 2.5 billion people are projected to have some degree of hearing loss by 2050, and over 1 billion young adults risk permanent hearing loss because of unsafe listening practices.

Fortunately, hearing supplements can help. Hearing supplements contain natural ingredients to target tinnitus, deafness, hearing loss, ear inflammation, and other hearing issues.

All hearing supplements claim to boost your hearing. However, most of them don’t work.

Our editorial team ranked the top-rated hearing loss supplements. After much deliberation, here are our rankings.

How We Ranked

Every hearing supplement claims to support hearing. However, only the best hearing supplements actually work. Some are built on junk science, while others use proven ingredients.

To separate the best and worst hearing supplements, we used the following metrics:

Science-Backed Ingredients & Dosages: Some ingredients have been proven to support ear health and hearing when used at correct dosages. We preferred hearing supplements that used strong dosages of proven ingredients. We avoided hearing supplements based on junk science. Certain ingredients have been proven to support hearing in double-blind, placebo-controlled trials.

Claims of Curing Deafness: All reputable hearing supplements simply claim to support your ear health and hearing. Per FDA regulations, supplements cannot claim to cure, treat, or prevent a disease. However, some of the lower-quality hearing supplements specifically claim to cure deafness. These supplements are marketed to vulnerable older adults with hearing issues. Disreputable supplement companies claim these formulas will cure deafness and solve other serious hearing issues overnight. In reality, they’re overpriced supplements backed by zero evidence. We preferred hearing supplements with open, honest claims about supporting hearing health.

Manufacturer Reputation & Experience: Some supplement companies have entered the hearing supplement space to make a quick dollar. Others have a proven reputation for developing high-quality, science-backed formulas with a medical advisory board. We preferred manufacturers with a proven reputation and strong experience.

Moneyback Guarantee or Refund Policy: People experience hearing loss for many different reasons. Hearing supplements work in different ways. A hearing supplement that transformed one person’s hearing may be ineffective for another person’s hearing. That’s why we preferred hearing supplement companies with a moneyback guarantee or refund policy.

Transparent Ingredients & Dosages: All reputable hearing supplements disclose their full list of ingredients and dosages upfront. However, some supplements use proprietary formulas or hide their labels, making it difficult to see what’s inside. We preferred hearing supplements with transparent ingredients and dosages.

Formulated by Physicians or Ear Health Specialists: Some hearing supplements are made by doctors, physicians, and certified ear health specialists. Others are made by digital marketers sitting in an office. Your hearing is a critical part of your overall health. Because some hearing supplements claim to target your brain, ear canal, and other sensitive parts of your body, we preferred supplements that were formulated by physicians or ear health specialists.

Price, Value, and Cost: Good hearing aids cost anywhere from $1,000 to $6,000 per device, depending on the level and quality. Hearing supplements cost much less than that. Some people are willing to pay $100 per month for a hearing supplement, while others are looking to spend less than $10. We considered the price, value, and cost of the hearing supplement in our rankings. Our budget-friendly hearing supplements still offered good value, while our premium-grade hearing supplements offered premium ingredients and proven benefits. Whatever your budget may be, we wanted you to get good value for your hearing supplement.

Complementary Ingredients & Effects: People experience hearing loss for different reasons. Some hearing loss supplements contain complementary ingredients to provide additional effects. Instead of just targeting inflammation in your ear, for example, some supplements target inflammation in other parts of your body. We considered complementary ingredients in our rankings, and we preferred supplements with multiple proven ingredients at strong dosages.

Proven Technology Backed by Audiology, Otolaryngology, and Otology: Audiologists, otolaryngologists, and otologists specialize in treating ear health issues. We preferred ear products that were supported by any or all of these ear health specialists.

Customer Reviews & Experiences: People experience hearing loss for different reasons. Even the best hearing loss supplement may not work on all people. Hearing is an objective thing: you can test hearing to see how you compare to others. However, hearing issues like tinnitus can be subjective. Some people hear the ringing, whirring, or whooshing in their ears, while others do not. We considered customer reviews and experiences in our rankings.

Who Should Take a Hearing Supplement?

Millions of people could benefit from a hearing supplement. The World Health Organization predicts that over 1 billion young adults are at risk of permanent, avoidable hearing loss because of unsafe listening practices. And, by 2050, nearly 2.5 billion people worldwide are expected to have hearing loss.

  • People with tinnitus or any type of ringing, whirring, or whooshing in the ears
  • Men and women of any age with hearing loss, deafness, or hearing problems in one or both ears
  • Anyone who has noticed their hearing gradually decline in recent years
  • Someone who wants to control inflammation in their ears using natural ingredients
  • Anyone looking for a natural, easy, and effective solution to their hearing issues

Whether you have tinnitus, hearing loss in one or both ears, or any other type of hearing condition, you may be able to benefit from a hearing supplement.

Causes of Hearing Loss

According to the World Health Organization, hearing loss is caused by different factors at different ages.

During the prenatal period (before you’re born), for example, you could develop hearing loss problems due to genetic factors or intrauterine infections (like rubella and cytomegalovirus infection). As you get older, things like smoking, chronic disease, and chronic ear infections could lead to hearing loss or deafness.

The most common causes of hearing loss, however, are exposure to loud noises and ototoxic medicines. Both of these causes are preventable.

Some of the most common causes of hearing loss include:

  • Genetic factors, including hereditary and non-hereditary hearing loss
  • Intrauterine infections, including rubella and cytomegalovirus infections
  • Birth asphyxia (a lack of oxygen to the brain at the time of birth), low birth weight, and other perinatal conditions
  • Chronic ear infections, meningitis, and collections of fluid in the ear during childhood and adolescence
  • Chronic diseases
  • Smoking
  • Otosclerosis
  • Age-related sensorineural degeneration and sudden sensorineural hearing loss
  • Trauma to the ear or head
  • Loud noises and loud sounds
  • Ototoxic medicines and exposure to work-related ototoxic chemicals
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Viral infections and similar ear conditions

Every year, thousands of children in the United States are born with hearing issues. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, approximately 2 to 3 out of every 1,000 children in the United States are born with a detectable level of hearing loss in one or both ears.

The vast majority of children with hearing loss (over 90%) are born to hearing parents.

Age is a major predictor of hearing loss. As you get older, you have a higher risk of developing hearing loss. However, men between ages 20 and 60 are twice as likely to have hearing loss issues compared to adults of other ages.

The Dangers of Hearing Loss

The downside of hearing loss is obvious: you want to hear the world around you, and hearing loss makes that difficult.

However, many people don’t consider the other dangers of hearing loss, including:

  • Issues with communication and speech
  • Social isolation, loneliness, and stigma
  • Education issues (many people with hearing loss or deafness do not receive an adequate education, particularly in developing parts of the world)
  • Difficulty finding employment (a higher percentage of people with hearing loss are in the lower grades of employment compared to the overall workforce)

How Hearing Works

To understand the benefits of a hearing supplement, it helps to understand how hearing works.

We hear all of the time, yet many of us don’t understand what really happens when sounds travel from the ears to the brain.

Here’s how hearing works:

Step 1) Sound waves enter the outer ear.

Step 2) The sound waves travel through a narrow passageway called the ear canal. This passageway leads to the eardrum.

Step 3) As the sound waves hit the eardrum, they cause the eardrum to vibrate. The eardrum sends these vibrations to three small bones in your inner ear, including the incus, malleus, and stapes.

Step 4) The three inner ear bones transfer their vibrations to fluid within the cochlea of your inner ear. The cochlea is snail-shaped and filled with fluid.

Step 5) As the fluid within the cochlea vibrates, it creates a traveling wave along the basilar membrane. The basilar membrane is an elastic portion running from the beginning to the end of the cochlea. It’s called the basilar membrane because it forms the base on which other hearing structures sit. Hair cells, which are sensory cells sitting on top of the basilar membrane, ride the wave created by the fluid.

Step 6) As your hair cells move up and down, it causes small objects on top of the hair cells called stereocilia to bump against the structure and bend. This bending creates channels at the tips of the stereocilia. Chemicals rush into these channels to create an electric signal.

Step 7) The electric signal travels to your brain along the auditory nerve. Your brain interprets this electric signal in a way you can recognize and understand.

Hearing supplements work by targeting different parts of this hearing process, making it easier to hear. Some target inflammation within your ear, for example. Others even claim to support your auditory nerve in various ways.

How Do I Know If I Have Hearing Loss?

Nearly 30 million Americans have hearing loss, yet many don’t seek treatment for their condition. Many don’t wear hearing aids, for example, or take hearing supplements.

The main symptom of hearing loss is obvious: if you have trouble hearing, then you may have hearing loss.

Here are some of the questions to ask yourself if you think you have hearing loss:

  • Do you have trouble hearing people on the phone?
  • Do you struggle to hear conversations when there’s background noise
  • Is it hard for you to follow a conversation when two or more people are talking?
  • Do you need to strain to hear a conversation?
  • Do you frequently misunderstand what people are saying?
  • Do you hear a whirring, clicking, buzzing, or ringing sound in your ears?

You may also have hearing loss if your TV is too loud. If people complain about your TV volume, for example, or the volume of your car music, then it could be an early sign of hearing loss.

Surprisingly, one of the symptoms of hearing loss is that some sounds seem excessively loud. If you struggle to understand conversations yet some sounds seem excessively loud, then you may have hearing loss.

Preventing Hearing Loss

Many types of hearing loss are preventable. You may be able to prevent hearing loss by spotting ear infections early, wearing ear protection, and avoiding exposure to loud noises, among other strategies.

Some of the best ways to prevent hearing loss include:

  • Practice safe listening strategies to reduce exposure to loud noises
  • Wear ear protection
  • Get immunized against diseases like rubella that could cause hearing loss
  • Identify and manage common ear conditions in partnership with a healthcare provider
  • Use medicine responsibly to prevent ototoxic hearing loss

Hearing Supplement Benefits: What Does Science Say?

Taking a supplement to target hearing loss seems unusual. However, science tells us that certain hearing supplement ingredients could support ear health and hearing in various ways.

Vitamin C is one of the most proven hearing loss supplement ingredients available today. One animal study showed that vitamin C may have protective effects against noise-induced hearing loss. Noise-induced hearing loss is the most common preventable cause of hearing loss in the world.

Other hearing supplements use carotenoids to fix hearing issues. Carotenoids give fruits and vegetables their unique colors. Growing research has linked carotenoids to health benefits. In this 2015 study, researchers found that women with higher levels of two specific carotenoids (beta-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin) had a lower risk of hearing loss. The study analyzed the dietary habits of more than 65,000 people.

Folate, also known as vitamin B9, is another popular hearing loss supplement ingredient. It plays a crucial role in cell division, and you can find folate in many foods. In this randomized clinical trial from the Netherlands, researchers found that taking an oral folic acid supplement was linked to a reduced risk of hearing decline over a three year period.

In this 2011 study, researchers evaluated the lifestyle and diet habits of 26,273 men between ages 40 and 75. In this study, researchers found an association between specific vitamins and minerals and hearing loss. Specifically, men who had higher levels of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, vitamin B12, or folate in their diet (or took supplements with these ingredients) had a lower risk of hearing loss.

Some studies have suggested that vitamins, herbs, and plants with antioxidant effects could be effective for hearing loss. In this 2021 study published in the Journal of Occupational Health, researchers found that vitamin B12, folic acid, and N-acetyl L-cysteine may have a protective effect by acting as antioxidants within the ears and brain. If inflammation or oxidation within the ears and brain is causing your hearing loss, then these nutrients may be able to help.

Similarly, this 2013 study echoed the findings of other studies here, suggesting that antioxidant vitamins like vitamin C and beta carotene were linked with a lower risk of hearing loss. However, researchers also found an additional connection between magnesium and hearing loss. People who took magnesium supplements or had more magnesium in their diet were less likely to develop hearing loss.

Many hearing supplements contain hawthorn extract, which comes from hawthorn berry. Hawthorn berry has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. Today, some studies suggest it can specifically help with hearing and ear health. Although the British Tinnitus Association acknowledges the use of hawthorn berry as a tinnitus remedy, the organization found no evidence supporting the use of hawthorn berry for tinnitus.

Could eating more garlic help with your hearing? Some people use garlic for ear infections and earaches, and garlic has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. In fact, some people stick garlic in their ears or eat raw garlic to target ear pain.

In this 2018 study, researchers evaluated the effects of garlic extracts and vitamin B12 on noise-induced hearing loss. Researchers gave garlic extract to healthy rats, then damaged their hearing with noise. Researchers found that ascorbic acid, resveratrol, and CoQ10 seemed effective at treating and preventing noise-induced hearing loss in previous studies. After testing the rats, researchers concluded that two natural ingredients in garlic extract, including S-allylmercaptocysteine (SAMC) and diallyl disulfide (DADS), had similar benefits at preventing hearing loss, suggesting that garlic could help support ear health or prevent hearing loss.

Some of the most exciting research in the hearing loss space has focused on green tea. Green tea is rich with polyphenols that appear to help support hearing and ear health. In this 2015 study, researchers found that the polyphenols in green tea protected cochlear hair cells from ototoxicity by inhibiting notch signalling. Researchers found that natural catechins in green tea, including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) were linked with better hearing and overall ear health.

Ginkgo biloba is an herb found in many hearing loss supplements listed above. In this 2019 study, researchers compared ginkgo biloba extract with hearing aids to determine if ginkgo biloba could really support hearing. Researchers observed a significant improvement in symptoms of tinnitus within 90 days of taking a ginkgo biloba supplement, and researchers found that ginkgo biloba genuinely improved hearing and ear health. However, more research is needed to verify these benefits.

Some of the supplements listed above claim to cure deafness and solve severe hearing issues within weeks. Unfortunately, there’s no evidence that any hearing supplement can actually reverse hearing loss after it has started to occur. Some supplements appear to have protective or preventative effects against hearing loss, but no supplement or ingredient has been shown to cure deafness, reverse hearing loss, or improve symptoms of severe hearing issues.

Overall, however, the best way to support hearing health is to maintain a balanced diet. A diet rich with vitamins, minerals, fruits, and vegetables is associated with a lower risk of developing hearing issues.

FAQs on Hearing Loss, Deafness, and Hearing Supplements

We get plenty of questions about hearing loss, deafness, and hearing supplements. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we receive:

Q: How do I know if I need a hearing aid?

A: If hearing loss is affecting your daily life, or if you have trouble communicating with others and keeping up with your daily lifestyle, then you may need a hearing aid. Talk to your doctor or get your hearing tested with an audiologist to determine if a hearing aid is the right choice for you.

Q: Will a hearing aid make me hear like normal?

A: Hearing aids are designed to amplify noises around you and make it easier for you to hear. However, they will not correct the natural function of your hear, nor do hearing aids prevent the progression of hearing loss over time.

Q: If I have hearing loss in both ears, then do I need to wear two hearing aids?

A: Some people prefer to wear two hearing aids, while others prefer to wear a single hearing aid. Wearing two hearing aids can provide better hearing in a noisy environment, an improved signal, and a better ability to localize sounds. Wearing a single hearing aid can make it difficult to determine where noises are coming from.

Q: How much do hearing aids cost?

A: The average hearing aid costs around $2,500, with most hearing aids priced between $1,000 and $6,000.

Q: Why are hearing aids so expensive?

A: Hearing aids cost anywhere from $1,000 to $6,000. Many Americans are surprised by the high cost. Some blame insurance companies and rising healthcare costs. Others attribute it to the low overall numbers of hearing aids sold worldwide compared to the total number of people with hearing issues. The cost of a hearing aid could also include the cost of an a test with an audiologist. If you’re looking for a cheap alternative to hearing aids, consider hearing supplements.

Q: How common is hearing loss?

A: Approximately 17% of Americans report having some degree of hearing loss. Among older adults (those older than 65), nearly 30% of people have some level of hearing loss. Meanwhile, approximately 50% of people 75 and older have some type of hearing loss.

Q: Do hearing aids help with tinnitus?

A: Hearing aids may help with your tinnitus. However, most tinnitus sufferers do not experience relief from tinnitus symptoms with a hearing aid. You’ll still hear the ringing or whirring sound in your ears, although you may find it easier to hear.

Q: How does TRT work?

A: Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) is a sound therapy program designed to relieve tinnitus. It’s one of the most popular and proven treatments for tinnitus.

Q: Do loud noises cause hearing loss?

A: Loud noises play a significant role in hearing loss. In fact, loud noises are among the most common causes of hearing loss.

Q: How do loud noises cause hearing loss?

A: High-decibel noises can cause permanent damage to your inner hear. They can also increase the risk of developing tinnitus.

Q: What is tinnitus?

A: Tinnitus is a hearing condition where you experience a ringing, whirring, clicking, hissing, or buzzing sound in your ears.

Q: What causes tinnitus?

A: Some people experience tinnitus because of inflammation or physical damage to the ear. Others experience tinnitus because of exposure to loud noises.

Q: How do I protect my ears from loud noises?

A: Noise-induced hearing loss is preventable. Avoid noises at or above 85 decibels to limit your hearing loss, or wear protection when exposed to these noises. Common activities where you should wear ear protection include lawnmowers, snowblowers, motorcycles, firecrackers, and loud music.

Q: Can medications lead to hearing problems?

A: Some medications can cause irreversible hearing loss and ear damage. In fact, ototoxic medicine is one of the leading causes of hearing loss in the United States. Additionally, PDE5 inhibitors (used for erectile dysfunction), diuretics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen and aspirin), and other drugs can also cause hearing loss.

Q: What causes hearing loss?

A: The most common cause of hearing loss is exposure to loud noises. However, you may also experience hearing loss because of medicine usage, disease, illness, infections, and genetic reasons.

Q: How do I know I have hearing loss?

A: If you have trouble hearing people around you, or if you need to strain to hear people, then you may have hearing loss.

Q: Can young people get hearing loss?

A: Hearing loss is more common among older adults. However, millions of people between ages 20 and 50 experience hearing loss every year. In fact, most people with hearing loss (65% of people) are younger than age 65. Plus, 6 million Americans under age 44 suffer from hearing loss, including everyone from children to teenagers to young adults.

Q: What is presbycusis?

A: Presbycusis is the medical term for age-related hearing loss. As you get older, the cumulative damage to your ears over the years can make it harder to hear, leading to gradual sensory degradation.

Q: What is conductive hearing loss?

A: Conductive hearing loss occurs when damage to the middle or outer ear prevents incoming sound waves from reaching the inner ear. You can treat conductive hearing loss with medications or surgery. If left untreated, however, conductive hearing loss can become permanent.

Q: What is sensorineural hearing loss?

A: Sensorineural hearing loss, also known as sensory neural hearing loss, is the most common type of hearing loss. It occurs when the inner ear or acoustic nerve is damaged, making it difficult to hear sounds and understand speech. Many people treat this type of hearing loss with hearing aids.

Q: How do doctors diagnose hearing loss?

A: Doctors may diagnose hearing loss with a physical exam, general screening tests, app-based hearing tests, tuning fork tests, and audiometer tests. These tests assess your hearing in various ways to determine if you have hearing loss.

Q: What causes hearing loss?

A: Hearing loss can be caused by loud noises, presbycusis (aging), genetics, temporary blockages (like earwax), disease, ototoxic medications, otitis media (an ear infection), otosclerosis (hearing loss caused by abnormal bone growth in the ear), and ear or head injuries, among other factors.

Q: What is the ringing in my ears?

A: If you have a ringing sound in your ears, then you may have tinnitus. Tinnitus is a ringing, whirring, or whooshing sound in your ears. Some people experience it constantly, while others experience it from time to time.

Q: How common is tinnitus?

A: Approximately 50 million Americans have some degree of tinnitus.

Q: Do both ears have the same hearing loss?

A: Both ears do not have the same hearing loss. In fact, studies have shown that your left and right ears absorb information differently from one another. The left ear may be better at receiving emotional information, while the right ear is better suited to speech and logical information. As you might expect, your ears may have different degrees of hearing loss because of multiple factors – like noise exposure.

Q: Can I prevent hearing loss?

A: Many types of hearing loss are preventable. Noise-induced hearing loss, for example, is preventable by wearing protective devices when exposed to loud noises.

Q: What are assistive listening devices?

A: Assistive listening devices (ALDs) are portable amplifiers you can use in conjunction with hearing aids or on their own. They make it easier to separate speech from background noise, allowing you to follow conversations.

Q: Are Q-tips or cotton swabs bad for my hearing and ears?

A: Q-tips and cotton swabs are a popular way to remove wax from your ear. However, they could cause more harm than good because they push wax further into the ear canal. This can lead to physical damage or even an eardrum rupture. Even if you don’t have earwax, Q-tips can irritate, scratch, and cut the ear canal, increasing the risk of hearing loss.

Q: How do hearing supplements work?

A: Hearing supplements contain vitamins, minerals, herbs, plants, and other natural ingredients to support ear health in various ways. Some supplements target inflammation in your ear or brain. Others support hearing or ear health in other ways.

Q: What’s the best hearing supplement?

A: SharpEar, SANE Vitaae, Volumil, Youthful Brain, and Clarisil Pro are among the best and most popular hearing supplements available today.
