Washington North Coast magazine won Third Place for Best Niche Product

Washington North Coast magazine won Third Place for Best Niche Product in the contest by Society for Features Journalism in Division 1, competing with papers nationwide up to 90,000 circulation.

The award is for the first two issues in 2016 of the brand-new magazine put out on super-tight deadlines with scarce but mighty resources under the helm of former features editor Jessi Loerch; designers Lynn Jefferson and Margi Hartnett; staff writers Gale Fiege and Andrea Brown; photographers Andy Bronson, Ian Terry, Dan Bates and Kevin Clark; and regular freelancers Aaron Swaney, Doug Parry, Megan Brown and Erin Pride.

It was a joint effort between news and advertising staff and the first time they developed a product of this caliber together.

The first issue of Washington North Coast Magazine was produced, start to finish, in six weeks … and in the spare time of a core team who meantime had to write, edit and design content for a daily paper. It was teamwork fueled by coffee, chocolate and the saving grace of freelancers —- and news editor Mark Carlson.

The contest was for work published in the 2016 calendar year.

Judge’s comments: This magazine enthusiastically reflects its location and readership. It’s chock full of interesting stories covering a variety of topics, including food, local adventures and gardening. It’s a magazine to flip through or to linger with for a while.
