Diindolylmethane supplements have surged in popularity in recent years.
Today, many people take diindolylmethane (DIM) supplements for testosterone, cancer, weight loss, acne, or hormones. As WebMD explains, DIM appears to help destroy cancer cells and reduce swelling.
Diindolylmethane sounds like a complex chemical. But it’s not. Your body makes diindolylmethane on its own from a chemical called indole-3-carbinol, which is a natural component of broccoli, cauliflower, and other cruciferous vegetables.
Today, the best DIM supplements let you enjoy the benefits of diindolylmethane without requiring you to eat multiple heads of broccoli or cauliflower.

PrimeGenix DIM 3X
PrimeGenix DIM 3X is a popular and well-rated DIM supplement that claims to reduce harmful estrogen and help regain your male edge – all with 100% natural ingredients.
Taking PrimeGenix DIM 3X daily can metabolize estrogen, improve mood and energy, and support testosterone production.
Like other DIM-based testosterone boosters, DIM 3X works by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme aromatase. That enzyme converts testosterone into estrogen in your body, raising estrogen levels and lowering levels of testosterone. As you age, this enzyme can become more active. PrimeGenix DIM 3X aims to block these effects.
Cellucor P6 Ultimate GH
Cellucor P6 Ultimate GH is a growth hormone supplement that uses DIM and other ingredients to target various hormones within your body.
Priced at $200 per bottle, P6 Ultimate GH is the Rolls Royce of DIM supplements. Cellucor describes the formula as the “world’s most advanced GH support formula.”
In addition to 100mg of DIM per serving, P6 Ultimate GH contains shilajit, L-arginine, velvet bean, apple extract, long jack, and other ingredients linked to testosterone, growth hormones, and other hormones. According to Cellucor, the supplement can boost testosterone, increase male vitality, and build lean muscle, among other benefits.
Provacyl
Provacyl is an all-natural HGH and testosterone booster that aims to help men fight male menopause. Taking Provacyl daily can raise testosterone levels, increase human growth hormone (HGH) production, and raise energy and sex drive.
Provacyl is also one of the few supplements on this list that claims to be doctor-recommended. According to the official website, at least one doctor recommends using Provacyl for its targeted benefits.
As men get older, they go through a version of menopause when testosterone levels drop, and estrogen levels rise. Andropause or male menopause can change your life. Provacyl aims to help.
Hormonal Health HB5
Hormonal Health HB5 is a favored weight loss formula. The supplement targets men and women who struggle to lose weight because of blocked hormones.
Over the years, your body could block certain hormones. Even if you’re eating right and exercising, you may struggle to lose weight because of these blocked hormones.
Hormonal Health HB5 aims to help. According to the manufacturer, you can lose 1lb of fat every 48 hours when taking Hormonal Health HB5, rapidly transforming your body and making weight loss easy.

Zhou DIM Active
Zhou Nutrition has launched a popular DIM supplement called DIM Active. The Utah-based company delivers a supplement with 250mg of DIM per serving.
We like Zhou DIM Active because it complements its DIM dosage with broccoli seed extract and Bioperine (black pepper extract). The broccoli seed extract could raise levels of DIM in your body even further (broccoli is an excellent source of a chemical that your body converts to DIM). And Bioperine appears to boost the absorption of DIM, which means more of the active ingredients end up in your body.
Where Zhou DIM Active beats its competitors, however, is with the cost. At under $20 per bottle, DIM Active is one of the best-value DIM supplements on our list. Zhou DIM Active is tough to beat for pure DIM at a discount price.
Estrotase
Estrotase is a hormone balancer and natural aromatase inhibitor supplement that blocks estrogen to restore hormonal balance.
Priced at $50 per bottle, Estrotase can purportedly remove the type of estrogen that causes hormonal imbalances to occur. To do that, Estrotase contains a blend of zinc, Maca, Tongkat Ali, grape seed extract, DIM, kudzu root, and chrysin, all of which are popular in other hormone targeting supplements.
Each serving of Estrotase contains 100mg of DIM, which is linked to beneficial effects in studies. The Portland-based manufacturer advertises Estrotase primarily to bodybuilders.

We Like Vitamins makes its DIM in the United States. By taking it daily, you can help support healthy hormone and estrogen levels along with healthy menopause, among other benefits, according to We Like Vitamins.

If you want the maximum dose of DIM per capsule, then Nutricost DIM is one of the best options on our list. Each capsule contains 300mg of DIM and 5mg of Bioperine for maximum effects. Nutricost makes the formula in a GMP-compliant, FDA-registered facility.

That means you get DIM from two angles.
With 60 pills per bottle and a price of $26.99, EstroHalt continues to be a popular option for people seeking to balance estrogen for all different reasons.
Genius Estrogen Balance
Genius Estrogen Balance is The Genius Brand’s contribution to the DIM supplement space. Each bottle of Genius Estrogen Balance contains 30 veggie capsules of DIM to block estrogen, manage cortisol, and support thyroid health, among other benefits.
Instead of only containing DIM, Genius Estrogen Balance includes 150mg of DIM mixed with 150mg of grape seed extract and 5mg of Bioperine. That means you can maximize absorption while also inhibiting aromatase with grape seed.
Grapeseed is a natural ingredient with similar effects to DIM but works differently. Grape seed may inhibit aromatase naturally, helping block the conversion of testosterone into estrogen. Genius Estrogen Balance is one of the few DIM supplements that use this unique combination, and it’s well-rated for that reason.

We also like Nature’s Way DIM Plus because it uses a unique DIM formula called Indolplex. That professionally-formulated version of DIM can enhance the effects further, helping more DIM end up in your body.
Truevantage DIM Elite
Truevantage DIM Elite is a DIM supplement with 250mg of DIM per serving, making it one of the more powerful options on our list.

MDacne DIM Skin Clearing
MDacne Customized Skin Clearing Supplements is a customized skin-clearing supplement that, unlike most DIM supplements on our list, is specifically designed to help treat hormonal acne.
Some studies suggest DIM can help with hormonal acne. Hormonal imbalances can cause acne. If your acne is flaring up because of hormones, then a DIM supplement could help.
Each bottle of MDacne DIM Skin Clearing contains DIM mixed with cruciferous extracts, helping you get your maximum daily recommended serving of diindolylmethane.
However, one of the most significant advantages of MDacne’s Customized Skin Clearing Supplements is a dermatologist-developed it. That gives MDacne’s formula more legitimacy than competing DIM supplements on our list.
Purest Vantage DIM Supplement

How We Ranked The Top Diindolylmethane (DIM) Product Brands
Every diindolylmethane (DIM) supplement claims to give you a high-quality source of DIM. However, not all supplements are made equal. There’s a vast difference between cheap and high-end DIM supplements.
To separate the best and worst DIM supplements, we used the following ranking factors:
DIM Dosage
All DIM is pretty much the same. The quality doesn’t matter, but the dosage does. Most DIM studies involve a dosage of 100mg to 900mg. We focused primarily on DIM supplements that used 100mg or more. Studies suggest that DIM works at doses as low as 100mg, although it could work more effectively at 300mg and higher doses. Most DIM supplements used a dose of around 100mg, with some of the higher-ranked DIM formulas using dosages of 150mg, 250mg, or even 350mg per capsule.
Science-Backed Formulas
DIM has been proven to help support estrogen balance in some studies. Good DIM supplement companies cite large, human trials to validate the DIM inside each formula. Some of the best DIM supplement companies even perform direct clinical trials on their formulas to verify they work. The more evidence a company could cite to support its formula, the higher we ranked it.
Ease of Use and Capsule Quality
Nobody wants to swallow a horse tranquilizer-sized capsule to get their daily dose of DIM. We considered ease of use and capsule quality in our rankings. We disliked DIM supplements that used cheap gelatin to create the capsule, and we preferred supplements that used veggie capsule ingredients. The easier a formula was to use, the higher we ranked it.
Price & Value
Like any trendy supplement space, the DIM supplement space is booming with excellent and poor products. Some supplements are priced high with no justification. Others are priced low yet offer good value. We believe you should get an ideal DIM supplement on a tight budget, and we also think you should get premium ingredients for a premium price tag.
Advertised Benefits
Although many people use diindolylmethane (DIM) to target cancer, DIM supplement companies cannot claim to cure, treat, or prevent any disease – including cancer. We were wary of supplement companies that advertised DIM supplements as a cure or even hinted about it. If a company is willing to ignore FDA rules on advertised benefits, they’re eager to cut corners in product quality.
Complementary Ingredients
We primarily judged supplements based on their dosage of DIM. However, we also considered complementary ingredients in our rankings – mainly if the supplement targeted growth hormone or testosterone production. Some DIM supplements contain libido boosters, blood flow enhancers, and other ingredients linked to hormone production.
Manufacturer Reputation & Transparency
Some manufacturers have a reputation for creating high-quality supplements. Others are new and have a limited track record. We preferred manufacturers with a proven reputation for producing high-quality supplements over the years.
Doctor Recommended or Made by a Medical Advisory Board
The best DIM supplements are recommended by doctors or, at least, were formulated by a medical advisory board. Some of the world’s best supplement companies maintain a medical advisory board to ensure safety and efficacy. The more professionals created a specific DIM supplement, the higher we ranked it.
What is a DIM Supplement?
A diindolylmethane (DIM) supplement contains a concentrated form of DIM.
DIM is a natural compound your body creates after eating cruciferous vegetables – like broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.
Research suggests DIM can interact with estrogen, which could cause various effects throughout the body. For example, some people take DIM for hormonal changes, while others take DIM for hormone-specific cancers.
What Are the Best Sources of DIM?
The best sources of DIM are cruciferous vegetables and DIM supplements.
Add more DIM to your diet with broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and Brussels sprouts. Or, buy any of the top-ranked DIM supplements listed above.
If you aren’t getting enough cruciferous vegetables in your diet, then DIM supplements may help.
Cruciferous vegetables don’t technically contain DIM: they have a natural chemical called indole-3-carbinol that appears to be linked to DIM. As your body breaks down this natural chemical, it creates DIM, raising DIM levels in your body.
Benefits of DIM Supplements
Early studies suggest DIM supplements may support all of the following benefits:
- Testosterone
- Anticancer effects, particularly for hormone-linked cancers like breast and prostate cancer
- Weight loss
- Acne
- Symptoms of menopause
- Symptoms of PMS
Some studies also suggest DIM helps with inflammation, general hormonal balance, sleep, stress management, and more.
How Does DIM Work?
To understand how DIM works, you first need to understand we have two types of estrogen in our bodies: good and bad estrogen.
Good estrogen helps protect the heart and brain, floods your body with inflammation-controlling antioxidants, promotes cell growth, and encourages cell renewal while getting rid of damaged cells.
Bad estrogen, meanwhile, appears to cause cancer. People who are obese and those with high levels of inflammation tend to have higher levels of bad estrogen. Free radicals cause inflammation and raise levels of bad estrogen within your body.
DIM appears to swing the balance in favor of good estrogen. When you take DIM, it helps to metabolize good estrogen while decreasing bad estrogen. DIM also inhibits aromatase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into estrogen.
Diindolylmethane (DIM) Supplement Benefits: What Does Science Say?
Diindolylmethane (DIM) research is limited. However, early studies on DIM are promising.
Many early studies on DIM focused on its ability to target estrogen. DIM appears to balance estrogen levels in the body, for example. Some studies suggest DIM can also stimulate the production of a less potent, more beneficial form of estrogen called 2-hydroxy estrone.
Eventually, one study found a connection between DIM and a more robust form of estrogen called 16 alpha-hydroxy estrone. This type of estrogen is linked to weight gain and increased risk of certain cancers, including breast cancer and uterine cancer.
Your body uses an enzyme called aromatase to convert testosterone into estrogen. Many testosterone supplements work by inhibiting aromatase, helping stop the body from converting testosterone (a crucial male sex hormone) into estrogen. In this study, researchers found DIM inhibited the aromatase enzyme, which could prevent your body from turning testosterone into estrogen.
Over the years, studies have increasingly explored the anticancer effects of DIM. For example, in this study, researchers found evidence in test tubes and animal cells that DIM could help prevent the growth and spread of breast cancer cells. In a yearlong follow-up study, researchers gave 130 women with breast cancer a placebo or 150mg of DIM twice per day. Both groups of women were receiving tamoxifen therapy. Researchers found that DIM supplements led to significant improvements in the ratio of two types of estrogen, including 2-hydroxy estrone and 16-hydroxy estrone. Adjusting this ratio could reduce the risk of breast cancer and create anti-tumor effects.
In a separate study, researchers gave 108mg of DIM per day to a group of 19 post-menopausal women with early-stage breast cancer. They found DIM led to beneficial changes in estrogen levels.
Other studies suggest DIM can help with more than just breast cancer. In this 2018 study, for example, researchers found that DIM suppressed ovarian cancer cell visibility and metastasis while enhancing chemotherapy sensitivity. This 2016 study showed that DIM helped with gastrointestinal cancer by encouraging the death of cancer cells and increasing the efficacy of other drugs.
Meanwhile, this 2014 study found that DIM was associated with multiple therapeutic effects on prostate cancer cells. A separate study found that DIM could help combat prostate in intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN), which is linked to the growth of prostate cancer cells and could be a precursor to prostate cancer. To assess the effects of DIM on prostate cancer cells, researchers told a group of 21 men with early warning signs of prostate cancer (high-grade PIN) to take either a placebo or 900mg of DIM per day. The group of men taking DIM experienced significant improvements in prostate health and better PIN biomarkers.
It’s not all good news for DIM and cancer: some studies have found no correlation between certain types of cancer and DIM. In one of the most extensive DIM studies to date, researchers told a group of 551 women with cervical abnormalities to take 150mg of DIM per day. Researchers observed no effect on cervical cells whatsoever. DIM also appears to not correlate with non-hormonal types of cancer. Because DIM balances hormones, it affects hormone-linked cancers but not other types of cancers.
Beyond cancer, DIM could also help with weight loss. Because DIM interacts with estrogen, it could affect weight loss in men and women. Estrogen imbalances are associated with weight issues. If you have too much or too little estrogen, you may have an increased risk of gaining weight. Researchers gave DIM to a group of mice following a high-fat diet in one study. Researchers found DIM significantly reduced the formation of new fat cells in the mice.
Some people also use DIM to relieve symptoms of menopause. Because DIM affects estrogen, it could also address symptoms of menopause. For example, hormonal changes can cause hot flashes, and many people use DIM supplements to reduce hot flashes. Although there’s little evidence supporting the use of DIM for hot flashes, DIM supplements remain popular.
You may be able to use DIM to help with PMS. PMS symptoms are linked to monthly changes in estrogen levels. Although some people experience relief from PMS symptoms after taking DIM supplements, research has found no significant correlation between PMS symptoms and DIM usage.
Many men take DIM to raise testosterone. Some men have naturally lower testosterone levels or higher estrogen levels. Men’s estrogen imbalances are linked to erectile dysfunction, breast growth, infertility, and other issues. Some people take DIM supplements to help correct these imbalances. However, little research explicitly confirms a connection between DIM and estrogen.
Finally, some people take DIM supplements to help with acne. Acne is linked to hormonal changes. If your hormonal changes lead to acne, then a DIM supplement may help balance your hormones. However, there’s little evidence proving this connection.
Many natural testosterone boosters contain DIM. DIM is one of the most popular and proven natural testosterone boosters on the market. One study found that DIM genuinely increased testosterone and reduced estrogen, although that same study found DIM reduced sperm quality.
Overall, early research on diindolylmethane (DIM) supplements is exciting. However, many of the studies have taken place with animals and test tubes – not in large groups of humans. Over the coming years, however, we may learn more about what DIM does, how it works, and some of DIM’s most impactful benefits.
Side Effects of DIM
Human studies on DIM have not connected the compound to significant or severe side effects. However, some people report side effects like:
- Darkening of the urine
- Increased bowel movements
- Headaches
- Gas and indigestion
Less common side effects of DIM supplements include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and skin rashes.
In one study on DIM, 70% of people experienced non-serious side effects from taking DIM, including darkening of the urine. About 25% of participants experienced increased bowel movement, while 18% had headaches or gas.
Talk to your doctor before taking DIM if you take medication or have a severe medical condition – like cancer. Some cancers are sensitive to hormones. Your doctor will determine if DIM is the right choice for you.
It’s also important to note that DIM supplements have not been extensively studied. Although DIM supplements are linked with few side effects in most people, we need more research to verify their safety and efficacy.
Recommended Dosage of DIM
Diindolylmethane (DIM) supplement studies typically use a dosage of 150mg to 900mg per day, often split into two or three doses.
Follow the recommended dosage options on your DIM supplement to ensure the optimal range. Or talk to your healthcare provider to determine optimal dosage.
