CUSTER, Wash. — A woman has died and a Washington State Patrol trooper was seriously injured when a vehicle crashed into a trooper’s patrol car as it sat parked along I-5.
The Bellingham Herald reported the crash happened Friday afternoon on northbound I-5 near Custer. The trooper had stopped his vehicle on the side of the freeway to respond to a rollover crash and a car crashed into him as he sat inside.
Trooper Heather Axtman said the trooper was trapped inside the vehicle and suffered a head injury. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Axtman said the woman in the car that hit the patrol vehicle was unresponsive. About an hour later, Axtman said the woman had died.
Identities have not been released.
Custer is about 15 miles north of Bellingham.
